    Chapter 2459

The clash of weapons and shouts echoed under the dim glow of the street lamps.

Five figures were locked in a relentless battle, their movements swift and deadly. Blood sprayed through the air, staining the ground beneath them. The area around them was in chaos.

After what felt like an eternity, the battle finally ended. One by one, the fighters collapsed, their bodies motionless in pools of blood.

In the faint light, the aftermath became clear—three assassins in black lay dead. One had his neck crushed, another had a blade driven through his chest, and the third bled out from countless wounds.

But Tobias and Stephan weren’t much better off.

Stephan’s body was covered in deep gashes, some so severe that bone was visible. Blood soaked his clothes.

Tobias, too, was in critical condition. A knife had slashed across his abdomen and shoulder, and his right arm had been severed. He looked utterly battered.

    “Cough… cough…”

Stephan let out a weak gasp, then crumpled to the ground. Blood dripped from his lips as he struggled to breathe.

His wounds were fatal—his chest and abdomen had been torn open, and his organs were spilling out. His pale face barely showed any sign of life. He was holding on by sheer willpower, clinging to the last shreds of his strength.

The moment his enemies fell, his own life force began to fade.

    “Stephan… Stephan!”

Tobias gritted his teeth, pressing down on his own wound as he forced himself to move. He staggered forward, step by step, until he reached Stephan’s side.

Seeing his comrade gasping for breath, Tobias felt a sharp pain—not from his wounds, but from the anguish in his heart.

Desperate, he fumbled for a pill and forced it into Stephan’s mouth, tearing strips of fabric from his own clothes to wrap the wounds.

But it was no use. Stephan’s injuries were too severe. The medicine couldn’t save him, and the makeshift bandages did nothing to stop the bleeding.

“Stephan! Hold on! I’ll get you to a hospital!”

Panic surged through Tobias as he tried to lift Stephan. But with one arm missing, his balance faltered, and he failed over and over.

    “Tobias… listen to me…”

Stephan’s blood-stained hand grasped Tobias’s arm weakly. His voice was faint.

“I… I won’t make it. You still have a chance to escape… Go. Please… take care of my wife and children…”

“No! You’re not dying here! We’ve fought through hell and survived—we won’t fall now! Stay with me!”

Determined, Tobias hoisted Stephan onto his back and stumbled toward the truck.

Blood dripped behind them, marking a crimson trail.

Tobias fought with everything he had, but it wasn’t enough.

Stephan’s body suddenly went limp. His head lolled to the side.

    He was gone.

    “Stephan! Stephan, wake up!”

Tobias stopped. His breath hitched. He called out again.

    But there was no response.

Stephan was silent, as if he had simply drifted into sleep.

A sharp pain twisted in Tobias’s chest. His eyes burned red.

Stephan should have had a full, happy life. But because of him, his friend had been dragged into a fight he never should have faced. Now, he was dead.

Regret and sorrow crashed over Tobias like a tidal wave.

If he had never asked Stephan for help…If he had never provoked these ruthless enemies…Maybe none of this would have happened.

    Then—

    Vroom!

The screech of tires shattered the silence.

Several black commercial vehicles sped toward him before screeching to a halt, blocking the road.

    Doors swung open.

More than a dozen masked assassins in black poured out, quickly surrounding Tobias.

The leader, a cold-eyed killer, glanced at the fallen bodies of his comrades and frowned.

“You’re strong,” he admitted. “Killing my men proves that. But in the end, you still won’t escape.”

Tobias clenched his jaw. “Cardinal Dragon Marshal sent you, didn’t he?”

The assassin scoffed. “A dying man doesn’t need to know.”

He raised a hand. “Take him.”

At his command, the assassins charged.

“I’m taking you all down with me!”

With a furious roar, Tobias lunged into battle.

He had only one arm left, but he didn’t care. His body was broken, but his spirit burned hotter than ever.

Driven by pure rage, he fought like a beast. When his fists weren’t enough, he used his teeth, his head—anything to inflict pain.

“Take him alive!” the leader ordered.

The assassins hesitated, afraid to use lethal force. Instead, they tried to wear him down, dodging and maneuvering to drain his strength.

Tobias fought relentlessly. But his body was failing him.

Sweat drenched him. Blood poured from his wounds. His breaths came in ragged gasps.

    He wouldn’t last much longer.

    The assassins knew it, too.

They didn’t need to kill him. They just had to wait.

Realizing he was out of options, Tobias’s eyes hardened with resolve.

“You want to take me alive?”

    “Dream on.”

With the last of his strength, Tobias raised his remaining hand—

And slammed it against the top of his own head.

If he couldn’t escape…With no way to escape, he simply chose to commit suicide.
