The car slowly pulled away from the base.

They chatted along the drive. Once the car entered the city, Caleb asked, “Want to grab something to eat together?”

“I can’t. I want to go home and have dinner with my family,” Celeste refused, just as firmly as always.

It was the answer he had expected. Caleb knew where the boundaries were, so he didn’t push any further.

He got out of the car first. Only then did Celeste take her phone out of her bag and turn it back on.

There were quite a few missed calls, but most of them were from Jordyn.

She had rushed to the base so suddenly, busy handling the tasks Zachary had assigned her, that she hadn’t even told Jordyn she was leaving on a “business trip.”

Still, Celeste wasn’t too worried. If Jordyn couldn’t reach her, she would definitely contact the Rodriguez family to ask about her.

“Mom, you’re finally back!”

Celeste smiled faintly. “Alright. Come over, then.”

When the Rodriguez family heard Celeste was back, they prepared a few extra dishes. But when they found out Jordyn would also be joining them for dinner, Betty and Adeline both paused for a moment.

Jordyn was still a child. They didn’t truly blame her for being close to Wynn. If anything, they felt the responsibility rested with Trevor.

After all, Jordyn’s attachment to Wynn had been influenced by him.

So when emotions had been running high before, they couldn’t help feeling hurt whenever they thought about Jordyn.

Matthias had only told him that Celeste had taken leave to handle some personal matters.

Kieran didn’t know exactly what she had been busy with. He had wanted to tell her that if she ran into any trouble, she could come to him for help.

But he also knew that if Celeste truly needed help, Matthias would already be handling it. She didn’t need him.

Since Matthias hadn’t explained much and had specifically told him not to disturb her too often, Kieran didn’t ask any more questions.

After Celeste returned to her office, Kieran went to the pantry and made her a cup of coffee before bringing it over personally.
