Rising from the Ashes (Andrew and Lauren) Chapter 3134
Throne City plunged into chaos. Panic swept through the streets, fear gripping everyone in its wake.
“Move, now! Get to the walls!” someone shouted. “The Cathedral can still hold back, but Andrew couldn’t wait. Damn him!”
“The Ludendorff family will never fall!” another voice roared. “Fight them to the end!”
“The Black Knight Legion—deploy all units!” a commander bellowed. “Live or die, you must hold the Ludendorff stronghold at any cost!”
All across the city, troops flooded the streets, rushing to defensive positions. From the Throne Hall, orders poured out in an endless stream, one after another, like a raging storm.
Inside, Alonzo stared at the massive electronic command screen, his nerves stretched to the breaking point. He needed to identify the next possible breach. Under no circumstances could the family headquarters fall—unless he himself died in battle.
At last, the most urgent matters were barely brought under control. Alonzo then made the call he had been dreading the most.
“Ramon,” he said through clenched teeth, “the family has reached a life-or-death moment. What happens next is up to you.”
He tried to restrain his anger, but his words still burned with fury.
On the other end, Ramon replied calmly, “Uncle Alonzo, I’m sorry, but there’s nothing I can do.”
Alonzo erupted. “You bastard! Have you forgotten that Ludendorff blood runs in your veins? Throne City and the Ludendorff family gave you everything. Now that the family stands on the brink of annihilation, you dare stand by and do nothing? How can you be so cold-blooded?”
Ramon’s voice dropped, edged with anger of its own. “Uncle Alonzo, I’ve already told you—I no longer have the ability to support the family. Throne City has become a target for everyone. Andrew striking first doesn’t mean he’s the only one who wants it.”
He continued evenly, “The Cathedral, the werewolves, the vampires—even other factions—all have their eyes on Throne City. It’s pointless. The tide has turned. The era of the Ludendorff family ruling the Wastelands is coming to an end.”
“I’m the family’s only remaining heir,” Ramon added. “I can’t afford a single mistake. Securing Aurora City and preserving a foothold is the best path forward for the Ludendorff family.”
Alonzo screamed, “You traitorous bastard—!”
Ramon ended the call before he could finish.
Alonzo’s eyes burned with rage. He seized the desk phone and hurled it to the floor, shattering it into pieces. Outside his office, the guards trembled, yet none dared step inside.
After a long while, Alonzo finally regained some composure. He looked out the window, his heart sinking further with every passing second. He murmured, “The sky looks especially gloomy today.”
It was as though the weather itself was reflecting the Ludendorff family’s impending doom.
“Bring me my armor!” he shouted.
The guards hurried in, carrying his battle armor and fastening it onto him piece by piece.
Two minutes later, fully armored and gripping a heavy sword, Alonzo strode out of the Throne Hall. Outside, the Ludendorff family’s senior members, along with more than a hundred others, were already waiting. Their faces were etched with fear, anger, and helpless confusion.
Alonzo’s jaw clenched, the muscles in his cheeks twitching violently.
In the past, when Raiden was still alive, anyone who dared to look so weak and defeated would have been severely punished. The Ludendorff family ruled the Wastelands through fear—and ruled their own people the same way.
Now, however, a wave of exhaustion washed over Alonzo. He no longer had the strength, or the will, to deal with any of it.
