Stop Being A Coward

Mia’s POV

Gas’s ears perked up, and he hurried to the door, his tall wagging nonstop. Moments later, we heard the sound of a key being inserted into the lock–my mother had returned from her mysterious “date.”

She stood by the door, surveying the unexpected gathering in the living room. She smiled at Scarlett and Morton, but her smile faded quickly as she sensed the tension in the room. “What’s going on?”

I didn’t want to worry her, but I could only describe what had happened in the simplest terms.

“Dad’s dead,” I said, the blunt words sounding like the kindest way to put it. “They found him hanging in his cell this morning.”

My mother’s expression remained calm, but she fell silent for a moment. “I see,” she said in a flat tone, placing her handbag on the table by the entrance. “They said it was suicide, right?”

I nodded, watching her closely.

“How convenient,” she remarked.

“You don’t seem surprised,” Morton observed.

My mother tumed her gaze to him. “I know my ex–husband, Mr. Morton. He had an excessive attachment to his own life.” She walked steadily toward the kitchen. “Would anyone like some tea? I find it helpful in situations like this.”

Scarlett and I exchanged glances. “Tea would be nice,” Scarlett answered for both of us.

My mother returned with the tea tray, her movements elegant despite the heavy conversation. As she poured the tea, I noticed how steady her hands were.

“Mom,” I

asked cautiously, “did you ever hear Dad mention Diana Porter?”

She looked up at me. “No, not specifically. But sometimes he’d suddenly end a conversation when I walked into the room. He always took those business calls alone.” She handed me a cup of tea. “I thought it was related to his affair with Helen, but maybe there were other reasons.”

I took a deep breath. I hadn’t told anyone about the diary yet, not even my mother.

“I heard that Diana Porter had an illegitimate child,” I said carefully, watching their reactions. “Did any of you know about that?”

Three blank expressions confirmed what I suspected. No one knew.

“Where did you hear this?” Morton asked.

“I have a source, not sure if it’s reliable.” I said vaguely. “I want to apply for an investigation into his death,” I said firmly. “I don’t believe for a second that he killed himself, and I want official records of that doubt.”

Are you sure that’s wise?” Scarlett asked. “If someone did murder him, poking around might draw their

“I’m already on their radar,” I said.

“Then we need to find out what that information was,” my mother said pragmatically. “And who might have wanted to silence him.‘

“I’ll help with the investigation request,” Morton offered. “I have contacts in the Justice Department who might be able to expedite things.”

“Thank you,” I said.

I thought about the diary hidden in my bedroom drawer. Whoever sent it to me had access to extremely private information. They knew things no one else seemed to know, including Diana’s pregnancy. And they chose to share that information with me specifically.

Who would send me such sensitive information?

But the first step was clear. We needed to get an official investigation into Richard’s death. Even if the prison tried to block it, creating a paper trail of our concerns might offer some protection.

If someone did kill Richard to silence him, they might think twice about coming after you if there’s already suspicion about his death. The last thing they’d want is to confirm those suspicions with another convenient accident.

“I’ll start the paperwork today,” I said. “Though I think these investigations often move slowly, and prisons are notoriously good at protecting themselves from liability.”

Everyone looked at me in agreement.

Morton cleared his throat. “If Kyle asks me, what should I say?”

I looked at him. “You only need to say one thing. If he wants to know anything about me, he should come and ask me directly.”

I paused, then continued, “Tell him stop being a coward.”
