The Unwanted Wife and Her Secret Twins Chapter 194

    Prison suicides

    Mia’s POV

    Wrong. All wrong.

I sat on the sofa, staring at the business card Lieutenant Walsh had left behind. The edges were crisp, the printing precise. Everything about it suggested order, procedure, systems functioning as they should.

But nothing about Richard’s death felt orderly or procedural.

“It doesn’t make sense, Gas,” I whispered. “Not one bit.”

My father was many things. He was manipulative, selfish, cruel when it suited him. But he had never struck me as suicidal. Quite the opposite. Richard Williams had been a survivor, clinging to advantage and opportunity with relentless determination. Even in prison, facing disgrace and a lengthy sentence, he had been looking for leverage.

Prison suicides. The phrase felt scripted, a convenient explanation for inconvenient deaths. Epstein. McAfee. People who knew too many secrets suddenly hanging themselves in their cells. Guards conveniently absent. Surveillance cameras mysteriously malfunctioning.

I pushed myself up from the sofa with effort, one hand supporting my lower back as I waddled to the kitchen for

In the kitchen, I paused with my glass halfway to my lips, a thought popped. My conversation with Richard had likely been monitored.

Three days ago, he was still pleading with me to get him out of prison, and today he committed suicide.

He had been on the verge of telling me something important about Diana Porter. And now he was dead.

Was Diana Porter’s daughter somehow connected to all of this?

My gaze drifted to the drawer where I’d hidden Diana Porter’s journal after receiving it. Someone had sent it to me deliberately. But why? Why sending me this but killing Richard?

And if he had been killed to silence him, was I next?

The doorbell rang, 1 checked the peephole and felt a rush of relief at the sight of Scarlett and Morton standing side by side in the hallway. I opened the door.

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” Scarlett said by way of greeting, her smile fading as she registered my expression. “What happened?”

I gestured them inside, waiting until the door was securely locked behind them before speaking.

“My father is dead,” I said, the words still sounding unreal as they left my lips. “They’re calling it suicide.”

    Scarlett’s eyes widened. “When?”

“This morning. Early. They found him hanging in his cell.”

Morton frowned slightly. “I’m sorry for your loss, Mia.”

The formality of lids condolence almost made me laugh. I can’t explain how I feel right now. My father had been monstrous in many ways, but he was still my father. Despite everything, some small part of me mourned.

“I don’t think it was suicide,” I said, moving back to the sofa with Scarlett following close behind. “He was making demands just days ago. Using information as leverage. Why would he kill himself now?”

“What kind of leverage?” Morton asked, remaining standing as Scarlett settled beside me.

I hesitated. “Information about Diana Porter’s death,” I said finally, deciding that basic facts would be safe enough. “He implied he knew things that others would want to keep secret.”

Morton’s expression sharpened with interest. “The Porter case is… complex. The implications extend beyond just Alexander Branson.”

    “What do you mean?” Lasked.

“There are powerful people whose business dealings might be exposed if certain aspects of the Porter investigation proceed too far.” Morton’s tone was careful, measured. “Not just in America, but internationally.”

I’m pretty sure that what Morton knows was told to him by Kyle. Kyle’s trip to Paris was most likely related to this investigation.

“My father also mentioned Nate,” I said, trying to recall the exact wording. “He asked why Nate left New York so suddenly. He implied that Nate knows more than he’s telling me.”

“Interesting,” Morton said, his expression thoughtful.

“Do you know something about Nate?” I asked.

Morton adjusted his cufflinks, a habit I’d noticed when he was considering his words carefully. “Not much beyond what’s publicly available. His family has significant influence in medical circles. Old money, though they keep a relatively low profile. His work has been exceptional, particularly in neurosurgery.”

“He called me about three weeks ago. He wanted me to go to Paris,” I said, remembering Nate’s urgent messages. “He kept insisting I was in danger in New York, that I should come to Paris as soon as possible.”

“Kyle should know this,” Morton interjected.

It’s strange, I found Morton’s words very upsetting.

    “Don’t tell Kyle. “I said.

    “What?” Morton frowned.

I know I should tell Kyle everything, s

would help his investigation. But then I think he should share his information with me, too. He ran off to Paris without saying a word. Is that any way to behave?

“I said I don’t want to tell him about it yet,” I said, looking at Scarlett and Morton.

Morton and Scarlett exchanged a look I couldn’t interpret.

    “What?” I said.

Scarlett hesitated, then sighed. “Okay. The choice is yours.”

That’s right. If Kyle wants to know what’s going on with me, he should contact me himself.
