Married At First Sight Chapter 4535
Maddox couldn’t talk Romina out of drinking. On top of that, when someone offered him a toast, Romina stepped in and drank on his behalf.
Worried that she might get drunk if this kept up, Maddox tugged at her arm. “Romina, let’s head back. Let’s go tell Mr. Lacroix we’re leaving. It’s getting late.”
“Has River left yet?” Romina suddenly asked.
“I’m not sure. I haven’t seen him around in a while,” Maddox replied, then added, “Romina, you’ve been drinking pretty hard tonight. Are you doing this because of River? Whether he’s here or not, what difference does it make to us? If he hasn’t left, are we supposed to stay just because of him?”
Did Romina care that much about River?
Maddox had sensed there was something unusual between them. Still, he wasn’t upset. He and Romina weren’t officially dating. They were just giving things another shot. If it turned out they weren’t a good fit, they could always just stay friends.
“He’s going to go complain to my grandpa,” Romina mumbled. “I went out earlier, poured wine on him, and kicked him.”
Maddox blinked. “…You should’ve cut him some slack. It’s Mr. Lacroix’s event—he went through a lot to make this happen. Let’s just hope River doesn’t come in to stir the pot.”
Romina huffed, “He’s so annoying. I swear, I want to stuff him in a sack and beat him up.”
Maddox chuckled awkwardly. “…Mr. York is fine with everyone else, but somehow, he brings out the worst in you—and you in him. I think you two just show each other your worst sides.”
Romina replied without hesitation, “If I don’t show him my bad side, what do you expect me to show him—my gentle side?”
Maddox had no response to that.
Romina muttered, “Why don’t you go check if River’s still here? If he’s left, we’ll go. Or if Grandpa Lafond has already gone home, then we’re good too.”
She was clearly worried River might really run to her grandfather and start complaining. As long as Grandpa Lafond left, she could relax.
“He’s probably staying here tonight,” she added. “He and Mr. Lacroix love chatting. On weekends, he’s never at home—always out visiting people. He complains we’re never home, but look at him—same thing. Like grandfather, like grandchildren.”
“Alright, I’ll go see if River’s still around.” Maddox nodded and left.
Half an hour later, he returned.
Romina’s face was flushed red—she was clearly drunk.
Maddox rushed over and steadied her as she stumbled. “Romina, I was only gone a little while. How many glasses did you drink? You’re completely drunk!”
Her aunt had warned him: when Romina got drunk, she liked to flirt with handsome men.
Tonight’s event didn’t have many young people—just a few bosses who brought their kids to mingle. But River was still outside, admiring the moon.
That’s right—River hadn’t left. He was still sitting out there, quietly enjoying the night sky. He turned away anyone who approached, politely asking to be left alone.
Though his clothes had dried from earlier, the smell of alcohol still lingered on him. Not because he drank too much, but because Romina had poured a drink on him.

River was undeniably handsome.
Maddox worried that now that Romina was drunk, she’d start flirting—and if she flirted with River? That would be… a scene.
He remembered his promise to Mrs. Lafond: to keep an eye on Romina. As tempting as it was to see how she’d behave, he did his best to guide her away.
“This wine is so good! Let’s have another drink,” Romina said cheerfully as she pulled Maddox back. “You’re back? Come on, let’s toast. I’m in a bad mood. I want to drink.”
Maddox tried coaxing her out again. “Romina, the party’s ending. Everyone’s heading home. Let’s go too. I’ll drink with you another day, okay? If you’re upset, I’ll stop the car on the way back, and you can scream into the night to vent. You’ll feel better.”
Romina let him lead her, but stopped suddenly. “Wow, look at all the stars! And the moon’s so pretty tonight.”
She leaned against Maddox, her fingers brushing his face. “Hey, handsome boy, come stargaze with me. Your skin’s a little rough—you should take better care of it. Doesn’t feel that nice.”
Maddox didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Romina’s mom was right. When she was drunk, she really did get handsy.
Luckily, Maddox was her plus-one tonight. Even if someone saw her touching him like that, no one would make a fuss.
“Romina, let’s head home. We can admire the moon more comfortably there,” he said, gently pulling her along.
But just after ten more steps, she shook off his hand and turned around.
Startled, Maddox followed her. “Romina, where are you going? Let’s go. Everyone else has left—it’s getting late.”
If this was what it was like taking Romina to a party, Maddox decided he’d seriously reconsider doing this again.
“Ooh! I see a handsome guy!” Romina suddenly lit up, striding toward someone about to enter the house.
Maddox followed her gaze and groaned. “Romina, that’s your arch-nemesis, River.”
Did River do this on purpose?
Couldn’t he see Romina was obviously drunk?
Or maybe he saw Maddox struggling with her and came over to enjoy the show.
“Hey, handsome, handsome!” Romina called out.
She broke free from Maddox and stopped right in front of River, blocking his path.
River’s dark eyes flickered with amusement. He raised an eyebrow at her.
Her face was bright red. Clearly drunk.
So much for “I can hold my liquor,” he thought.
He’d known Romina for years, but this was the first time he’d seen her drunk. Her usual sharpness was gone—replaced with a soft, almost flirtatious charm. She looked stunning.
“Handsome guy,” she said, squinting at him, “you look just like that jerk River.”
Without hesitation, her hand reached for his face.
“Wow… You really take care of your skin. Feels way better than the other guy.”
River: “…”
He turned to Maddox and gave him a silent look that said: What the hell is going on?

Maddox rushed over, grabbed Romina’s hand, and apologized to River. “Mr. York, I’m really sorry. Romina’s drunk—I’m taking her home now.”
As he spoke, he tried to pull Romina away, gently coaxing, “Romina, let’s go. You’ve had too much to drink.”
But Romina pulled free again, stepped in front of River with a mischievous smile, and said, “Hey, handsome, come let your big sister spoil you.”
“I just love good-looking guys—and you, you’re so handsome.”
She reached out, boldly caressing River’s face and neck. When her hand started to travel lower, River finally caught her wrist.
Watching her smile like that, River turned to Maddox and said, “Why did you let her drink so much? She’s totally drunk… so this is what she’s like.”
If the man she was teasing hadn’t been someone with self-control, who knows what could’ve happened?
Maddox explained, “After she bumped into you, Mr. York, she got upset. She kept drinking—every toast that came her way, she accepted. She even toasted others herself. I tried to stop her multiple times, but she wouldn’t listen.”
“She asked me to check if you had left because she was worried you’d tell her grandfather. I stepped out for about thirty minutes, and when I got back, she was already drunk. She kept insisting she wasn’t and that she could walk on her own.”
Clearly, her logic had checked out for the night.
River, holding one of her wrists, let her continue caressing his face with the other. When she leaned in for a kiss, he grabbed that hand too.
He told Maddox, “Mr. Johnstone, could you please let Mr. Lacroix know that I’m leaving? I’ll visit another day. I’ll take Romina home.”
Maddox hesitated. “Mr. York, I brought Romina tonight. I should be the one to take her back. I promised Aunt Lafond I’d look after her.”
But River had already picked Romina up in his arms and was walking to the parking lot. Over his shoulder, he said, “I’m more worried about you, Mr. Johnstone.”
The implication was clear—he didn’t trust Maddox’s self-control when Romina was like this.
Maddox was speechless.
Could he really trust River?
Weren’t River and Romina supposed to be mortal enemies?
Still, in the end, Maddox let River take her. He knew River might not get along with Romina, but he also knew River was a gentleman. Over the years, River had never been involved in any scandals or taken advantage of any women who liked him. He always kept his distance and never played with anyone’s feelings.
When River approached the car, his driver—who had been taking a smoke break—was stunned to see him carrying Romina. He quickly stubbed out his cigarette, opened the door, and watched as River gently placed Romina inside.
The driver blinked again when he realized who she was—the very person their Seventh Young Master always argued with.
“Uncle, get in. Drive,” River ordered.
Snapping out of it, the driver tossed the cigarette butt and hopped into the car. As he buckled up, he glanced at Romina and asked, “Seventh Young Master… that’s Miss Lafond, isn’t it?”
After settling her in, River let go. But instead of sitting still, Romina leaned over to him again, her hands continuing their exploration—touching his face, brushing his lips, even pretending to go in for a kiss.
The driver looked away in panic, afraid to witness what was coming next.
River calmly said, “She’s drunk. I’m taking her home. Head to the Lafond family estate.”
The driver nodded and sped off—with River and his so-called mortal enemy in the back seat.

Romina giggled. “Handsome, come on—give me a kiss.”
The driver stared ahead, face blank.
He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Miss Lafond was flirting with the Seventh Young Master.
River didn’t push her away. He let her cling to him, letting her tease and caress him. But when she started tugging at his clothes, he grabbed her hands firmly.
“Romina, don’t play with fire,” he whispered.
He allowed her to kiss his face and neck—leaving tiny trails of kisses—planning to use it as evidence for a complaint tomorrow. Maybe then Grandpa Lafond would make her take responsibility.
But he wasn’t going to let her go too far.
Because once the clothes started coming off… he wasn’t sure he could stop.
He was a man, after all.
Romina tried to keep going, but River firmly held her wrists and pulled her into his arms. She struggled for a moment, then slumped quietly against his chest and drifted off to sleep.
Soon, they arrived at the Lafond residence.
The driver slowed down and reported, “Seventh Master, looks like the Lafonds are asleep. The house is dark.”
River had heard that Romina’s parents were into health routines—they were usually in bed before ten.
When he’d left the Lacroix banquet, it hadn’t officially ended, but most guests were already heading out. It was getting late.
“I’ll call Donovan,” River said, not wanting to blare the horn and disturb the household.
He fished out his phone with one hand and called Donovan.
Donovan picked up quickly. “Mr. York? You’re calling me this late—what’s going on?”
Unlike his sister, Donovan had River’s number saved in his contacts with a note. Seeing River’s name at this hour immediately made him anxious.
Had his sister gotten into a fight with River again?
The two of them couldn’t go five minutes without clashing.
River asked, “Mr. Lafond, are you home? Or out?”
Donovan replied automatically, “I’m home. Just went to bed.”
He had just gotten back from an event, showered, and turned off the lights when his phone rang.
“Romina’s drunk,” River said. “I brought her home. I’m outside—could you come out and get her?”
“Romina? Drunk? No way. She’s got a high tolerance—she hardly ever gets drunk,” Donovan said, shocked.
“Why are you the one bringing her back? What about Maddox?” Donovan finally asked.
Wasn’t Maddox supposed to be her plus-one at the banquet?
Then it hit him—his sister, when drunk, had a habit of teasing good-looking guys.
Did she end up teasing River?
Donovan’s face turned pale. He leapt out of bed, phone in hand.
“Mr. York, wait there—I’ll be right out!”
He ended the call and raced to the front door—only to realize he was still in just his boxers. He turned back, threw on whatever clothes were within reach, and hurried downstairs.
He just hoped Romina hadn’t done anything too outrageous.
After all, of all the men at the Lacroix banquet, River had definitely been the best-looking.
And even drunk, Romina still had standards—she only flirted with truly handsome guys.
