Married At First Sight Chapter 4515

Finally, there was a man her daughter actually liked enough to give a chance. Mrs. Lafond couldn’t risk Maddox getting scared off.

Maddox asked, “What did you just say, Aunt?”

Now even more embarrassed, Mrs. Lafond lowered her voice and said, “Romina, when she drinks too much, likes to tease handsome guys. But she rarely gets drunk. Just make sure she doesn’t tonight.”

Romina was twenty-nine and had only been drunk twice. Both times she ended up teasing attractive men and scared them off. When she sobered up, she didn’t remember anything. If no good-looking men were around, she’d tease her best friends instead.

Maddox replied, “…I really can’t picture Romina flirting like that when she’s drunk.”

But he was secretly curious. He actually wanted to see what she was like drunk.

“Aunt, do you think I’m handsome enough?”

Mr. and Mrs. Lafond went quiet.

Was this kid hoping Romina would flirt with him?

“Maddox, don’t try to outdrink Romina. I’m afraid you’ll pass out before she even feels it,” Mrs. Lafond warned.

He smiled. He had seen Romina handle her liquor at social events—she could outdrink most.

“Don’t worry, Aunt. I was just joking. I won’t challenge her. I’ll keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn’t overdo it tonight.”

Word was, Mr. Lacroix had also invited River from Yantail—Romina’s sworn rival. But the guy was ridiculously good-looking.

If he and Romina both got drunk and she ended up flirting with River instead of him, that would be a disaster.

Those two were like cats and dogs. When they met, it was always a showdown. Even when they didn’t meet, they’d throw shade at each other through interviews and online.

Everyone in Eaglioncile’s business circle knew they were rivals.

But since Mr. Lacroix was well-respected, no one dared to refuse his invitation—so both were coming tonight.

“Thanks in advance, Maddox. You chat with your uncle for a bit—I’m going to check on Romina. She’s usually quick, but tonight she’s taking forever to get ready.”

She headed upstairs.

When she got to Romina’s room, she knocked. “Romina, are you ready yet? Can I come in?”

“The door’s open, Mom. Come in.”

Romina hadn’t even changed into her gown yet. She was still staring at her wardrobe, undecided.

Perfect timing. Her mom could help her pick one.

“You haven’t even changed yet? You’ve been up here forever. Maddox is already waiting downstairs.”

“I can’t decide which one to wear, Mom. Can you help me pick the best one?”

“These gowns were tailored just for you,” said Mrs. Lafond, walking in. “They’re all your style and suit you well. You’d look stunning in any of them. You’ve got a figure like a model—everything looks great on you.”

Still, she stepped over to help Romina choose.

“Maddox is wearing a black suit,” she said, holding up a dress. “Wear the white gown. Black and white—classic match. You two will look amazing together.”

Romina frowned. “I don’t really like white. It gets dirty so easily, and it’s super obvious when it does. Honestly, I’d rather wear a pantsuit—so much more comfortable. Dresses always feel awkward to me.”

“That’s not happening,” said Mrs. Lafond. “You’ve worn gowns before and looked stunning every time. Try this one—I want to see how it looks.”

Under her mom’s insistence, Romina reluctantly took the white gown and headed to the bathroom.

A few minutes later, she walked out and asked, “Mom, how do I look?”

“You look amazing. Come here, I’ll help you with a bit of light makeup. It’ll bring out your beauty even more. You’ll be the most gorgeous woman at the party.”

Mrs. Lafond, always graceful and elegant, was rarely satisfied with her daughter’s usual minimal makeup—it was almost like she wasn’t wearing any. But Romina was a grown woman now, and unless asked, she usually let her daughter do her thing.

Romina studied herself in the mirror for a while. Once she was sure she looked good, she sat at the vanity and let her mom do her makeup.

“Romina, are you really planning to date Maddox?” Mrs. Lafond asked while applying foundation. “Why the sudden change? I thought you said there was no spark after your blind date?”

Romina went quiet for a second. Then she said, “Out of all the guys I’ve met, I like Maddox the most. Grandpa’s worried about me staying single, so I thought I’d give it a try. My brother keeps saying I like River, but that’s ridiculous. River’s my arch-nemesis. I’d rather punch him than date him. So, I’m giving Maddox a shot—to prove I don’t like River.”

Mrs. Lafond paused. “Your brother really thinks you like River? The same guy who’s constantly fighting with you and stealing our clients? The Yantail boss?”

Romina rolled her eyes. “Who else? He’s even going to the party tonight.”

Mrs. Lafond seemed to be deep in thought.

Was her daughter genuinely into Maddox? Or was she actually harboring feelings for River without realizing it?

If she liked River but didn’t admit it—and got Maddox involved—that could get messy.

“Romina, you need to be honest with yourself. Figure out who you really like. Don’t play with both. That kind of thing never ends well.”

Romina groaned. “Mom, why do you sound just like my brother? I don’t like River. He’s so annoying. Every time he talks, I want to slap him.”

“But don’t you love ticking him off too?”

Mrs. Lafond had witnessed plenty of their bickering.

She had also met River before.

To be honest, he was even better looking than Maddox, and just as capable.

She didn’t know much about his background, except that he was from Wiltspoon, which was far from Eaglioncile.

Still, with how capable River was, she figured his family must be decent too. A child that impressive couldn’t have come from nowhere.

Romina huffed, “That’s because he keeps targeting me. There are tons of companies out there—why does he only mess with us?”

Her mom chuckled. “Romina, if I remember right, didn’t you start it? Out of all the competitors, why were you gunning for Yantail?”

Romina was speechless.

Whose side was her mom even on?

Okay, okay, I won’t say another word,” Mrs. Lafond said, amused by her daughter’s speechless expression. She focused on doing Romina’s makeup with care.

Once finished, she stepped back to admire her work and beamed. “You look stunning. With makeup, you’re even more gorgeous—like a fairy.”

Romina glanced at her reflection. “You should’ve said I look like a fairy without makeup too. Now it sounds like my beauty relies on makeup.”

Her mother laughed. “My daughter is a fairy with or without makeup. You could charm a truckload of men.”

She asked, “What jewelry are you wearing tonight?”

“Something simple. I don’t like flashy pieces. Honestly, I’m so beautiful I don’t need any jewelry. My elegance is natural—I don’t need any of that gaudy stuff.”

Romina opened the drawer of her vanity, took out a small box, and pulled out a delicate pair of earrings and a minimalist necklace. She put both on while looking in the mirror. She skipped the rings—she hated wearing anything on her hands while typing or signing papers.

“You wear those same pieces to every banquet,” Mrs. Lafond complained. “That necklace is tiny and plain, and those earrings are nothing special. You have so much jewelry. What’s the point of keeping it if you never wear it?”

“Since the day you were born,” she went on, “your grandparents and uncles have been showering you with jewelry for every birthday and holiday. I even organized a whole jewelry boutique just for you. That private collection puts most stores to shame—but you let it all just sit there.”

Romina smiled. “Mom, I’m not even married. Where would I get a daughter to pass them down to? Maybe I’ll never get married or have kids. I have nieces and nephews—I’ll gift the jewelry to my niece when she gets married. I like looking at the pieces, but I don’t enjoy wearing them. Can’t force myself.”

Though she appreciated beautiful things, Romina had never been into wearing them. Her collection remained locked up, untouched.

She didn’t even wear accessories to work. Her style was always clean and simple.

Mrs. Lafond had long given up trying to change her.

Everyone had their preferences. Romina just had hers.

Romina loved doing business and making money. The Lafond family was already wealthy, but she was always chasing more.

“Don’t say things like you’ll never get married,” her mother said. “There are stages in life—and when it’s time to marry and have kids, you should. One child’s fine, but two is better. Only children get lonely.

“No matter how close you are to your nieces and nephews, they’re not your kids. They have their own parents to care for. How much time will they really have for their aunt?

“You can say this stuff to me, but don’t say it to your grandfather. He’s already worried sick about your marriage. He says he regrets raising you too well. You’ve become so picky, you can’t find anyone up to your standards.”

In a city like Eaglioncile, not many men could outshine the Lafond siblings.

Romina’s brother was a little better—at least he was open to love and not too fussy. As long as a girl had a good background and decent character, he’d consider her. He was willing to settle down.

But Romina?

She rejected everyone.

Even men who matched the Lafond family in wealth and status were turned away by her for one reason or another.

Thinking of the only man who ever challenged her daughter and lasted, Mrs. Lafond sighed.

River. That mortal enemy.

“Romina, Maddox is a really great guy. He’s got a calm personality. Just give it a try. If it feels right after some time, marry him. We’re close to the Johnstone family. If you marry into that home and they ever mistreat you, we’ll be there to stand up for you.”

“If Maddox ever tries to bully me,” Romina said, “I’ll beat him up and knock some sense into him.”

Mrs. Lafond: “…”

Her daughter was just too fierce.

Most men would be terrified of her.

“Alright, let’s head downstairs. Don’t keep Maddox waiting. And don’t get drunk tonight. I already told Maddox to keep an eye on you. You don’t hold your liquor well. When you’re drunk, you start flirting with good-looking men. If it’s Maddox, fine—you’ll just have to take responsibility. But if it’s someone else…”

“I told you, I’m not going to get drunk,” Romina cut her off. “Most men can’t even outdrink me.”

She had better tolerance now. Those past incidents of drunken flirting were behind her.

She wouldn’t get drunk unless she faked it—or someone gave her hard liquor, which was rare at formal events. No one wanted business deals ruined by alcohol-fueled chaos.

“I get it,” her mom said. “But still—what if you’re in a bad mood, you drink more than usual, and things go wrong? Especially if River’s there. He could piss you off. I just want to remind you.”

Romina replied, “I’ll be fine. I’ve heard River can drink a lot, but I’ve never had a drinking contest with him. Tonight might be the first.”

They usually didn’t show up to the same events. But if she had the chance, she wanted to drink River under the table. That would give her a new reason to laugh at him.

“I’m heading out,” Romina said, already halfway out the door to avoid more nagging.

Mrs. Lafond followed instinctively. “If you run into River, hold your temper. Don’t scare Maddox away. Your father and I really like him. We’re hoping he becomes our son-in-law.”

Romina stopped and looked back. “If Maddox gets scared just because I argue with my mortal enemy, then he’s not the one. He’s out.”

“…Maddox is very mature,” her mom said gently.

Romina smirked. “Then he won’t scare easily, right?”

“You’re impossible,” her mother muttered. “I just have a bad feeling. Like you’re going to cause trouble at tonight’s banquet.”

“Mom, I’m not a toddler. What kind of trouble could I possibly cause?”

“If you’re that worried, why don’t you come with me?”

Mrs. Lafond quickly shook her head. “Those banquets go too late. I need my sleep.”
