River smiled. “But there’s no need to borrow money from you. Uncle River can earn enough to get married on his own. I’m really happy that you’re willing to help, though. Uncle River loves you both very much.”
Maverick said seriously, “But we want you to get a seventh aunt soon. Uncle River, let us lend you money to help you get married. You can pay us back slowly, whenever you earn more. We won’t charge you interest, and we won’t bug you about it. If my sister and I don’t have enough, we can ask Cairo and the others.”
River laughed. “You even know about interest on loans, huh?”
Maverick really was a York. Even at such a young age, he understood these things.
“How impressive is your Uncle River, huh?”
He gently patted Maverick’s head. “You can lend me money to get married, but Uncle River doesn’t have anyone in mind yet. Marriage is a big deal—it’s a lifelong decision. I have to find someone I truly like.”
“Auntie.”
Belle suddenly pointed at Romina, who was walking ahead with Serenity, and said, “Auntie.”
River immediately understood.
Belle meant Romina—she was suggesting he marry her.

She picked up one and glanced at River, who was holding Belle.

Romina replied, “I know you’ve got a good figure. I picked this out for my brother, but I’m not sure how it’ll look on him. You and he are about the same size, so I figured I’d have you try it on.”
River immediately felt a little sour, though he didn’t show it.
So, the suit wasn’t for him after all.
“What’s the point of seeing how it looks if you’re not even giving it to me?”
“You can’t really tell just by holding it up. If it looks good on you, I’ll buy a fresh one for my brother.”
It was just a sample piece.
River sighed. “Romina, have you even considered how I might feel?”
Romina looked confused. “Why would I? Who are you to me? Why would I care about your feelings just because I’m buying something for my brother? Don’t flatter yourself, River.”
River said, “Then why ask me to try it on? We’ve got nothing going on between us. You want me to be your free model, and I don’t even get a modeling fee. You think I’d be happy with that? Shouldn’t you at least consider how I feel?”
“We’re not even close. If we were, maybe I’d help you out for free.”
Romina was left speechless.
Just as the two of them were about to start bickering again, Serenity quickly walked over, took Belle from River’s arms, and said, “River, I’ll take Belle. You go try on the suit Romina picked.”
“If it makes you feel better, I’ll tell Romina to buy you a set, too—as payment for being her model.”
She winked at River, and he instantly got what she meant.
Romina: “Wait, I have to pay you just to try on a suit? What are you, a celebrity?”
“You have no idea how much I can make in a minute. Even a few minutes trying on clothes is costing me. I could be out there making real money. And don’t forget—we’re sworn enemies. If my enemy asks me for a favor, I’d be letting myself down if I didn’t ask for compensation.”
Romina: “You’re so obsessed with money. You must be broke.”
“I am broke. My nephews just offered to lend me their red envelope money so I can get married.”
River took the suit from her, held it up against himself, and said, “This brand’s great. I wear this label all the time. Your brother likes it too? This suit looks amazing on me. Why don’t you buy me one?”
Romina gritted her teeth. “River, I swear, I want to slap you just to see how thick your skin really is. You’ve got no shame!”
She snatched the suit back from him.
“You don’t need to try it on. My brother will look amazing in it.”
River smirked. “I already showed you how good it looks. I helped you out. You owe me.”
Romina was so mad, she laughed. “River, why don’t you just go rob a bank already?!”

River shrugged. “Well, if I don’t have a partner, I won’t go either. In that case, I’ll just rob you.”
His roguish expression irritated Romina even more. “A man like you shouldn’t fall in love. You’d only hurt whoever you end up with. And here Sister Seren was asking me to find you a girlfriend.”
“I’m not in a relationship. Can’t you see I’m still single at thirty-one?”
River looked at her and grinned. “My sister-in-law gave you this impossible task on purpose, didn’t she? Just so you could laugh at me. But hey, we’re both in our thirties. Still single. Still mocking each other. A couple of lonely losers.”
Romina shot him a glare, grabbed the clothes, and turned to leave. She didn’t want to keep arguing. Deep down, she’d already decided to give that blind date guy a chance.
At twenty-nine, being single with no prospects left her open to all sorts of gossip.
Dating? Sure. Marriage? She’d decide that later.
Honestly, Romina still felt that living alone wasn’t so bad.
When the bickering died down, Serenity finally spoke to River. “River, stop picking on Romina. She just wanted you to try on some clothes so she could see how they looked. She added with a sigh, “Why don’t you take ten days off and go on a few blind dates?”
Romina had already walked away, but she could still hear them. She cut in from a distance, “Sister Seren, we’re both women—don’t sell out your own. Someone like him? He’s better off single. Let’s not ruin a perfectly good girl.”
“If it were me,” Romina added, “I’d rather stay single forever than end up with him.”
River couldn’t resist. “You say that like I’m dying to be with you.”
And just like that, the two were at it again, snapping back and forth until they both turned away in frustration, refusing to look at or speak to each other.
Serenity was stuck in the middle, completely exasperated.
River had asked her to bring Romina out shopping because he wanted to see her.
