Shaim’s dark eyes narrowed as he watched Halsey struggle. Then, uddenly, he asked, “What are you doing?”

Halsey’s lashes fluttered nervously. “What do you mean? I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”

Shaun let out a cold laugh, reaching out to grip her jaw. “You weren’t like this when you needed something from me. You were so eager that day. Do you need me to remind you how desperate you were?”

The memories of their tangled moments in that private club flashed in her mind. Her small, pretty face flushed a soft pink. “Let go of me!”

Shaun’s sneer deepened. “Now that the crisis is over and I’ve lost my use to you, you’re ready to kick me aside and go hunting for the next one?”

Halsey stared at him in disbelief. “What do you mean, next one? Can you please not be so crude?”

“Did I say something wrong? Isn’t Calvin your new target?”

Shaun’s fingers tightened on her jaw, dragging her face closer to his.

“What exactly is your type? You don’t care for rich playboys like Gilbert anymore. Now you prefer young professors with brains and ambition? You’ve changed your taste so fast. I’m guessing you’ve had plenty of men around you these past three years.”

Halsey’s pupils contracted sharply. She hadn’t expected him to say something so cruel. His words felt like needles, stabbing into her heart one by one.

“That’s enough! Stop talking!” she snapped.

Shaun fell silent.

With a quick motion, Halsey pushed him away. “My personal life is none of your business.”

Without another word, she turned and walked away.

Halsey wondered how ridiculous she must seem. Was that really what he thought of her? What kind of person did he think she was?

Just then, Shaun hurried after her, grabbing her arm in one firm grip.

Halsey halted. “What do you want from me?”

Shaun cupped her face in both hands and bent down to kiss her.

“Mmm!”

His kiss came flooding over her like a tidal wave–intense and commanding, filled with fierce reproach and possessiveness. Halsey’s teeth parted involuntarily, tasting him. The rich and intoxicating scent of fine red wine he’d been drinking overwhelmed her, pouring into her mouth and nose.

Her legs suddenly went weak.

She had always loved the way he smelled. When he was Dwight, his scent had been clean and warm, making her addicted. But Shaun smelled expensive, a blend of refined aftershave and the lingering haze of wine. It made her melt. Shaun kissed her deeply, pushing her into a nearby room.

The room was dark, as the lights were off. He shoved her down onto a soft, wide bed and leaned over to kiss her again.

Halsey felt the world spin, her mind grasping for control. She raised her hands to push against his chest, struggling hard. “What are you doing? Let go of me! Do you hear me? No! Stop!”

When he heard her say “No“, his eyes glistened red as he sneered, “You’ll accept other men but not me?”

Halsey swung her hand, slapping his face.

Shaun wore a mask, but the slap knocked it off onto the bed. The room was dark, but they were so close that Halsey could still see his face.

Her eyes shone bright in the darkness, catlike and piercing. Shaun knew she was staring at him and raised a hand to cover her

eyes.

“Don’t look.”

Halsey pushed his hand away. “Let me go! Don’t touch me!”

Shaun’s chest rose and fell with heavy breaths. He bent down again and kissed her red lips, her soft, lovely face, the delicate curve of her neck…
