The Heartbreak Prescription Chapter 1165
Ivy set her bag down on the desk. “Yeah.”
Madge shut the door behind her and leaned against it, arms crossed, eyes sparkling. “And? Don’t tell me nothing happened.”
Ivy hesitated for a split second. “We talked.”
“Talked?” Madge repeated, clearly unconvinced. “That serious face he had earlier didn’t look like small talk.”
Ivy lowered herself into her chair. Her palm instinctively rested over her stomach. “I gave him the divorce agreement.”
Madge straightened immediately. “You did what?”
“He tore it up.”
Madge blinked. “He… what?”
“He said he wouldn’t agree to a divorce.” Ivy’s voice was calm, but her fingers tightened slightly against her abdomen. “Not now. Maybe not ever.”
Madge stared at her like she’d just spoken another language. “Wait. The same Mr. Lowe who barely smiles? The one who looked like he wanted to strangle someone when he found out about the pregnancy?”
“The same one.”
“And he refused to divorce you?”
Ivy nodded.
Madge pushed off the door and walked closer. “Why?”
Ivy swallowed. “He said if I insisted on divorcing him, he’d fight me for custody.”
Madge’s eyes widened. “He wants the baby?”
“Yes.”
For a moment, the teasing expression on Madge’s face faded into something more thoughtful. “That doesn’t sound like a man who doesn’t care.”
Ivy let out a quiet breath. “He said the baby is his. That he wants it.”
Madge sat down across from her. “And how did that make you feel?”
Ivy didn’t answer right away.
Confused.
Relieved.
Scared.
All of it at once.
“I don’t know,” she admitted. “I thought he’d be desperate to get rid of me. I thought once he knew the truth, he’d push me out.”
“But he didn’t.”
“No.” Ivy’s voice softened. “He said if there’s ever a divorce, he’ll be the one to bring it up.”
Madge let out a low whistle. “That sounds possessive.”
“It sounded… serious.”
Madge studied her friend carefully. “Do you want to stay married?”
The question hit harder than anything else.
Ivy looked down at her hands.
From the beginning, she had chased him. She had told him she loved him. She had schemed for this child. She had convinced herself she could walk away once she got what she wanted.
But when he ripped up those papers…
Her chest had tightened.
“I don’t want to leave,” she whispered.
Madge’s expression softened. “Then maybe stop pretending you do.”
Ivy gave a faint, conflicted smile. “It’s not that simple. He’s still angry. He hasn’t forgiven me.”
“Maybe not,” Madge said. “But he stayed at the appointment. He learned how to massage your stomach. He adjusted your seat belt. And he refused to divorce you.”
She leaned forward. “That doesn’t look like hate to me.”
Ivy’s heart trembled at the thought.
Love?
No. That was too much to hope for.
But maybe…
Maybe there was something there she hadn’t seen before.
Madge stood up, grinning again. “So, Mrs. Lowe, what’s the plan now?”
Ivy gently rubbed her belly.
“For now,” she said quietly, “we stay married.”
