The Heartbreak Prescription Chapter 1163
Ivy’s fingers tightened against the seat.
“I’m not,” she said quickly, even though she clearly had.
Nathan’s gaze lingered on her for a beat longer. Then he looked down at the seat belt. “It’s just the buckle. Relax.”
His voice was low, steady.
He reached past her shoulder, his arm brushing lightly against her coat. The faint scent of his cologne surrounded her—clean, subtle, familiar. Ivy held her breath without meaning to.
Click.
The belt loosened under his hand.
“There,” he said, pulling it free. He drew it across her body slowly, carefully avoiding her stomach. His movements were deliberate, almost cautious. He inserted the latch into the buckle with a soft snap.
“Don’t press it against your abdomen,” he added. “It should sit lower.”
Ivy blinked.
He adjusted the strap so it rested properly beneath her belly, making sure it wasn’t too tight.
“All set.”
He pulled back into his seat, closing the distance between them. The sudden space felt oddly cold.
“Thank you,” she murmured.
Nathan started the engine. The car eased smoothly out of the hospital parking lot.
For a while, neither of them spoke.
Traffic hummed outside. The city lights flickered past the windows as dusk settled in.
Nathan kept his eyes on the road. “Did the doctor say anything else I should know?”
Ivy glanced at him, surprised. “No. Just regular checkups. And to rest more.”
“Then rest more,” he said simply. “Don’t overwork yourself at the studio.”
She hesitated. “You don’t have to worry. I can handle it.”
“I know you can,” he replied. “That doesn’t mean you should.”
His tone wasn’t cold. It wasn’t distant, either. It was matter-of-fact… but there was something softer underneath.
Ivy looked down at her hands, her thoughts tangled.
He didn’t want this baby.
And yet he had stayed for the appointment. He had learned the massage. He had adjusted her seat belt like it was the most natural thing in the world.
She couldn’t understand him.
The car slowed at a red light.
Nathan spoke again, quieter this time. “When the baby’s born… if you need help at night, wake me.”
Ivy’s heart skipped.
“You don’t have to,” she said.
“I said I will.”
The light turned green.
He pressed the accelerator, his expression unreadable.
Ivy turned toward the window so he wouldn’t see the way her eyes had gone warm.
Maybe…
Maybe he didn’t hate this child as much as she thought.
