A prenatal checkup?

The moment Nathan heard those words, he froze. He had no idea any appointment had been scheduled.

“A prenatal checkup?” he repeated.

Wanda looked at him in surprise. “Mrs. Lowe is pregnant. The hospital scheduled her prenatal appointment for today. Didn’t she tell you?”

Ivy hadn’t.

Wanda frowned, clearly confused. “That doesn’t make sense. I just asked Mrs. Lowe, and she said you were going with her today. How could she not have told you?”

As she spoke, her gaze turned reproachful.

“Mr. Lowe, I’m not trying to lecture you, but this is extremely irresponsible.”

A headache throbbed behind Nathan’s temples. He met her eyes. “I honestly didn’t know there was any checkup.”

“No, Mrs. Lowe definitely told you,” Wanda insisted. “You just weren’t paying attention.”

“She didn’t tell me,” Nathan said with a sigh.

“That’s impossible.”

Wanda shook her head firmly. “She must have mentioned it. You just didn’t take it seriously. Mr. Lowe, I really have to criticize you for this. That’s your wife and your child. As a man, you should care about your family and take responsibility. You need to be a good husband and a good father.”

Nathan stared at her as she scolded him without restraint.

Wanda trusted Ivy completely. In her mind, there was no question that Ivy had mentioned the appointment. If there was a problem, it had to be Nathan.

Nathan was already in a foul mood. Being accused only made it worse. His expression hardened instantly, all warmth draining from his face.

But the real reason his face darkened was Ivy.

She hadn’t told him about the prenatal checkup. Why hadn’t she said anything?

Nathan stood and walked out.

“Mr. Lowe, where are you going?” Wanda called after him. “I’m not finished yet!”

Nathan didn’t give her the chance to continue. He got into his luxury sedan and drove away.

By then, Ivy and Madge had already arrived at the hospital. They checked in and went straight to the attending physician’s office.

The doctor looked at Ivy. “Are you here alone, Ms. Quinn?”

Ivy nodded. “Yes.”

“I came with her,” Madge added quickly.

The female doctor chuckled. “Ms. Quinn, what I mean is—this is your first pregnancy. Why didn’t the baby’s father come with you? Pregnancy can be especially hard on first-time mothers. We usually speak with the father as well—teach him how to help share the burden and offer guidance on prenatal bonding and early parenting. It helps strengthen family ties.”

Ivy could only smile awkwardly.

Nathan hadn’t come because she hadn’t told him. And even if she had, he probably wouldn’t have shown up anyway.

“The father is busy with work,” she said softly. “I’m fine on my own. Let’s proceed with the exam.”

The doctor nodded. “Alright. We’ll start with blood work, then do an ultrasound to check early development.”

Madge took the forms, and the two of them left together.

They went to the lab, where Ivy had her blood drawn. Madge glanced at the small mark on Ivy’s arm. “Did it hurt?”

Ivy smiled. “Not really.”

“But they took so much blood,” Madge said anxiously. “Sit here for a bit. I’ll get you some water.”

“Okay.”

Madge walked off.

Ivy sat alone on the bench. She didn’t feel any real pain, but after losing that much blood, she felt slightly lightheaded. Her appetite had been poor lately, and she hadn’t eaten much breakfast.

Footsteps approached. Assuming Madge had returned, Ivy looked up.
