Maybe Ivy’s gaze lingered on Nathan a moment too long. Nathan curled his lips slightly and asked with a half-smile, “Why are you staring at me like that?”

Ivy snapped back to herself and said sincerely, “Thank you.”

He hadn’t asked a single question, yet he understood exactly what kind of situation she was in.

Nathan said, “We’re husband and wife. If someone messes with you, they’re messing with me. If something like this happens again, you can tell me. Or if there’s something you want me to do for you, I’ll do it—as long as it doesn’t cross the line.”

Warmth spread through Ivy’s chest. “What counts as crossing the line?”

“Illegal things. Anything that breaks the rules,” Nathan replied.

Ivy was momentarily speechless. She honestly hadn’t expected such a serious answer. After all, she was a law-abiding citizen too.

She couldn’t help smiling. “So you’re saying that as long as it’s legal and proper, you’ll agree to any request I make?”

“You can try asking next time and see,” Nathan said.

He didn’t give a direct answer, but Ivy was already more than satisfied.

It was enough that her husband—someone she had married for strategic reasons—was willing to go this far, whether he meant it deeply or not.

“It’s cold out there. Let’s go back to the room,” Nathan said.

After they returned to the room, Ivy lifted the blanket and climbed into bed. “Are you still going to work?”

Nathan asked, “What about you?”

“I’m not planning to work anymore. I’m going to sleep.”

She was pregnant, after all. She needed proper rest.

Nathan set his phone aside. “Then let’s sleep together.”

They lay down on the bed. Usually, they only slept together after exhausting each other. Sleeping quietly like this, properly and peacefully, was actually a first.

Ivy turned onto her side, facing away from him.

Just as she was about to drift off, she felt the man behind her move. He pressed close, his deep voice brushing her ear. “Are you asleep?”

Ivy jolted awake. “Not yet. Why are you still up?”

Ivy froze. Had he noticed she was pregnant?

“What are you doing?” she asked, startled.

“Didn’t you say your stomach felt uncomfortable? I’m just rubbing it for you,” he replied.

Ivy let out a quiet breath. Thank goodness—he hadn’t noticed.

His hand moved in slow, gentle circles against her lower belly. It was incredibly soothing.

She turned to look at him. “You seem awfully good at rubbing a woman’s stomach. Be honest—which ex-girlfriend taught you that?”

Nathan replied flatly, “I don’t have any ex-girlfriends.”

Ivy raised an eyebrow. She knew Nathan had feelings for Wendy. That made sense. His standards were high.

“Then you figured it out on your own?”

“Is that really hard? It’s just rubbing a stomach.”

“For other people, maybe not. But you’re Nathan—the golden heir of the Lowe family. Seeing you take care of someone like this is still pretty surprising.”

Nathan looked at her. “That just means you don’t know me well enough yet. It’s fine. You’ll have plenty of time to get to know me.”
