Ivy slowly loosened her grip on Nathan, the weight of the moment pressing down on her chest.

“Do you not feel anything for me anymore?” she asked, her voice trembling despite her effort to stay composed.

“What do you think?” he shot back, irritation sharp in his tone. “You thought Lottie was my woman. If I really had someone else, then feeling nothing for you would be the most natural thing in the world, wouldn’t it?”

The color drained from Ivy’s face. Panic surged through her like a tidal wave. If Nathan truly didn’t care anymore, how could she ever get pregnant?

Desperation crept into her thoughts. If it came to it, she could use pills—anything that might keep a man with her through the night. The idea flashed through her mind, dangerous and impulsive.

“Hello, Mrs. Lowe,” they said in unison.

Nathan shot them a sharp glare. “I knew you were eavesdropping.”

He shut the door firmly and returned to the couch, tension filling the room. His gaze swept over them, stern and cold.

“This is my wife. She misunderstood and thought Lottie was my woman. Mr. Cross, you brought Lottie here, so it’s your responsibility to explain everything.”

Ivy stiffened, confusion washing over her.

Abbott hurried forward. “Mrs. Lowe, there’s been a big misunderstanding. Lottie isn’t Mr. Lowe’s woman.”

“Exactly,” another added. “We were all in the private room. Mr. Cross brought her in to keep Mr. Lowe company, but he didn’t even look at her.”

“He told her he was married and didn’t want you to misunderstand,” someone else said. “So he gave her his VIP tag and sent her out to buy cigarettes. We never expected her to run into you. We swear Mr. Lowe and Lottie met for the first time tonight, and nothing happened.”
