Halsey grinned. “Calvin, perfect timing! Here’s the menu. Let’s order!”

She handed the menu to Calvin.

Calvin took it and flipped through the pages. “I remember you loved barbecue ribs when you were a

kid.”

At that moment, Shaun had just finished his phone call and turned toward the private room door.

Since the door wasn’t fully closed, Shaun heard Calvin talking to Halsey about childhood memories. He withdrew his hand from the door handle and didn’t rush in. Instead, he stayed there quietly, curious about what Halsey and Calvin were chatting about.

Halsey nodded. “Yeah, but not just as a kid. I still love them! It’s kind of sweet that you remember my childhood favorites.”

Calvin‘ smiled warmly. “Of course, I remember! But back then, you were really close to Gilbert, and your families even arranged for your engagement.‘

Halsey didn’t want to bring up Gilbert. There were no good memories there. “I’m sure you’ve heard about Gilbert. There are no secrets in our circles. He’s history, and I don’t want to talk about him anymore.”

Calvin nodded. “Okay, we won’t talk about him. Honestly, when I found out you two were engaged, I was upset for a long time.”

Halsey’s body gave a small shiver. “Why were you upset?”

Hearing this, Halsey began to suspect that maybe Calvin had feelings for her. But that seemed impossible–back then, she thought she was ugly, and Gilbert had just used her.

“I was really ugly back then. Nobody liked me.‘

Calvin shook his head. “You weren’t ugly. Your eyes were bright, like stars in the night sky–so clear and cute. You were just focused on Gilbert. If you had looked up, you would have noticed someone had always admired you,”

Halsey’s heart skipped a beat. Now, she was certain that Calvin was into her. Still, she never would have guessed it.

But Halsey beat him to it, cutting Calvin off. “I still really love barbecue ribs. I even had some yesterday.”

Calvin froze. “Yesterday? Which restaurant did you go to?”

“No, I had them at home. Someone made them for me.”

Outside, Shaun stopped mid–step. He knew Halsey loved barbecue ribs, so he made them for her every day–it was her favorite dish at the table.

Halsey looked back at Calvin. “I already have a boyfriend.”

Calvin stiffened. “You have a boyfriend? Who?”

Halsey smiled gently. “His name is Shaun Lane. You’ve met him once before.”

“Shaun Lane?”

Calvin might be a college professor, but he knew about business circles, too, and Shaun was a rising star. Plus, he had met Shaun once–he was handsome, confident, and impossible to forget.

“Mr. Lane is your boyfriend?”

“Yeah. We’ve known each other since college in Hovendale. He’s an amazing cook–he makes barbecue ribs for me every single day. He really loves me, and I really love him, too.”
