Jorge didn’t notice the subtle shift in Celeste’s expression.

When his mother mentioned Caleb, he found himself agreeing. If Caleb had been there, at least he would’ve had someone to talk to that night.

By the time Celeste and the others prepared to leave, it was close to ten.

As Theodore and Helena walked them out, Theodore said warmly, “Cel, if you have time, come by more often with Matt. Helena and I are always happy to have you.”

Celeste smiled politely. “Of course. I will.”

Jorge stood off to the side, watching in silence.

The longer he observed, the more certain he became—his parents liked Celeste far more than he’d realized.

In fact, it almost seemed like they liked her more than Matthias.

After the door closed and Celeste and the others left, he couldn’t hold it in anymore.

“Dad, Mom, Celeste may be capable, but she’s not as upright as you think. She—”

Helena smiled faintly. “Is that so? I think Cel’s character is just fine. The more your father and I get to know her, the more we appreciate her.”

There was even a trace of regret in the way she looked at her son.

If only he hadn’t been so shortsighted… perhaps he and Celeste might have had a future.

Divorced or not, Celeste was exceptional—capable, poised, and principled. Nearly flawless.

Jorge had no idea what was running through his mother’s mind. He rubbed his temples, frustration building.

“Mom, I’m serious. She’s not what you think. She’s extremely calculating. She’s not nearly as harmless or obedient as she acts in front of you.”

Theodore immediately understood what was behind his son’s reaction.

“You’re saying this because something happened again between Cel and Ms. Locket, and you assume Cel was at fault?”

“They didn’t have a direct conflict, but she—”

Theodore and Helena exchanged a look. They could already guess where this was headed—most likely something involving Trevor.

Theodore gave a small, knowing smile. “What you see isn’t always the full picture. Your mother and I trust our judgment. And we hope you won’t let personal feelings cloud yours. Make a rational assessment.”

Jorge hadn’t expected his parents’ opinion of Celeste to be this solid.

Theodore patted him on the shoulder. “Get some rest.”

It was clear—they had no intention of reconsidering.

And in that moment, Jorge realized something else.

Celeste’s methods were far more sophisticated than he’d given her credit for.
