Celeste and Trevor walked out side by side. When they reached her car, Trevor spoke first.

“Do you have time Monday morning?”

Celeste was about to say yes when he continued, “Jo’s school is holding a parents’ meeting. The school requires both parents to attend.”

Celeste paused briefly. “Alright.”

After a moment, she added, “I can also take leave in the afternoon.”

“I have to go to Havenport at one.”

Celeste frowned. “Can’t you change the time?”

“Sorry,” Trevor replied.

Celeste pressed her lips together and said nothing. She turned around, got into the car, and shut the door.

“Drive safe,” Trevor said.

Before he finished speaking, the car door slammed shut with a sharp bang. Celeste stepped on the accelerator and drove off.

Trevor watched as the car disappeared from view. The corners of his lips curved into a faint smile before he turned and went back inside.

It was already late. Martha had returned to her room to rest, but Queenie and Teagan were still sitting in the living room.

Trevor nodded at them in greeting and said he needed to return a call before heading upstairs.

Queenie watched his retreating figure, as though she wanted to call out to him. In the end, she stayed silent.

Teagan glanced at her. “What’s wrong?”

Queenie shook her head without answering.

If Trevor intended to divorce Celeste just to marry Wynn, she would rather he not divorce at all.

At least Celeste came from a respectable, clean family background. Even though she had once used unsavory means to be with Trevor, Queenie still found her far more tolerable than Wynn.

Yet she knew that even if she tried to persuade him, Trevor wouldn’t listen.

Whatever he wanted to do now, no one in the family—not even her husband, Lincoln—could stop him.

Seeing the crease between her mother’s brows, Teagan understood her concern.

“From a man’s perspective,” she said, “I can understand why Trevor would choose Wynn.”

As a woman herself, she had to admit Wynn was charming—let alone through a man’s eyes.

Queenie rubbed her temples and remained silent.

She wasn’t especially close to Trevor, but deep down, she had always believed he was someone who would struggle to truly fall in love with anyone.

Wynn shouldn’t have been his type either.

Yet Trevor’s feelings and attitude toward Wynn had gone far beyond what Queenie thought she knew of him.

The next morning, Celeste went to the hospital with Betty and the rest of the family to visit Isabelle.

Isabelle’s condition had been fairly stable recently.

After the visit, just as Celeste and Betty were leaving the hospital, Celeste received a call from Jordyn.

“Mom, where are you? Dad and I are already at Granny’s place. Why isn’t anyone home?”

Jordyn hadn’t mentioned she’d be coming over that morning.

Celeste didn’t point it out. She only asked, “Your dad came with you?”

“Yes. But Dad just dropped me off. He still has social engagements later.”

Before Celeste could respond, Jordyn asked again, “Mom, where did you go? When are you coming back?”

“I just left the hospital. I’m heading back now. Wait—”

Jordyn cried out in alarm. “The hospital? Mom, are you sick?”

“No,” Celeste replied quickly. “I went to visit your grandmother.”

After chatting a bit more, Celeste hung up.

When Trevor heard that Celeste had been at the hospital, he seemed to already know why she had gone.

After Jordyn ended the call, he didn’t ask about it. He only reminded her of a few things before getting into the car and driving away.
