In the afternoon, after finishing her work, Wynn wanted to ask Trevor out for dinner. She called him several times, but none of the calls went through.

Finally, she called his secretary, Jacob.

Once the call connected, she asked, “I can’t get through to Trevor’s phone. Is he still busy?”

Jacob sounded a bit surprised. “Boss flew overseas this afternoon for a business trip. You didn’t know?”

Wynn froze. She really didn’t know. Trevor hadn’t told her.

“Was the business trip a last–minute decision?”

“Yes, it was.”

Even if it had been a last–minute decision, he surely could have found time to call or send her a message. But he didn’t say anything at all.
