In another place, Katarina sat across from her father, Otto Rosenheim, inside a quiet study.

Otto leaned back in his chair, fingers steepled, his expression unreadable.

“Have you successfully arranged Heinrich’s release from prison?” he asked calmly.

“Yes,” Katarina answered without hesitation. “If nothing unexpected happens, he’ll be out in a few days.”

She paused before adding, “Father, Count Lorenz just contacted me. He has Sofina—the wife of that Alex bastard.”

Otto didn’t even blink. He gave a slow, indifferent nod.

“Tell him to kill the woman.”

Katarina frowned slightly. “What’s your plan?”

“Katarina,” Otto said coldly, “in the past, Marquis Saint-Claire and his entire family were wiped out because they offended someone far more powerful than they ever should have.”

Katarina’s lips slowly curved into a knowing smile.

“More powerful than a Marquis…” she murmured. “Then it must be a Duke. One of the great Dukes who already despises Alex Saint-Claire.”

“You don’t need to know who it is,” Otto replied flatly. “All you need to understand is this: the last time they sent an assassin, that bastard survived because someone was secretly protecting him. This time is different.”

    His eyes hardened.

“They’ve set a trap with full backing. No matter who Alex brings with him, no matter who tries to shield him, everyone involved will be destroyed together. This time, nothing survives.”

    Meanwhile, at the Stahl mansion.

Count Lorenz greeted Sofina with a practiced smile as she entered the hall.

“Miss Sofina,” he said pleasantly, “what brings you here today?”

Sofina Scheinwald forced a polite smile, though tension tightened her shoulders.
“Frankly speaking, Mr. Stahl,” she said carefully, “our families have done business for decades. Suddenly demanding full repayment of all outstanding debts at once… it’s difficult for our accounting department to manage. I was hoping, for the sake of our long-standing relationship—”

Lorenz’s smile vanished. His expression turned cold.

“So you’re not planning to pay?” he asked.

He folded his arms, his voice hardening.
“Miss Wolfsbane, you should know my company’s policy. We don’t operate on credit. No payment, no materials. That’s always been the rule.”

    He paused, then sneered.

“My father once had a good relationship with Baron Wolfsbane, and because of that, he made exceptions. But the Baron is dead. My father is dead as well. I’m not bound by their sentiments.”

    Stepping closer, he continued sharply,
“Either you pay every coin you owe, or we report this to the authorities. I’m sure they’ll find a way to recover the money—by force, if necessary.”

    Sofina’s face went pale.

“Please don’t,” she said quickly, bowing her head slightly. “You know we’re currently collaborating with Eden Group, the largest corporation in Winchester. They would never default. Once the project funds are fully settled, we’ll repay you immediately.”

Lorenz studied her in silence, his gaze dark and calculating.

“That’s exactly the issue,” he said coldly. “We heard you received nearly a hundred million dollars from Eden Group, yet you’re reluctant to settle the twenty million you owe us. So tell me, Miss Wolfsbane—what’s the real problem?”

“But our long-standing relationship—” Sofina tried again.

“I’ve already made myself clear,” Lorenz cut in. “My father is dead. Whatever favors he granted died with him. You pay first, then I’ll prepare the mineral supply for your project with Eden Group.”

    The answer was unmistakable.

Sofina pressed her lips together, disappointment flashing across her face. She stood slowly.

“I’m sorry to have troubled you today, Mr. Stahl,” she said quietly. “I’ll return and speak with my grandmother. We’ll see if the debt can be settled as soon as possible so our workers can continue.”

    She turned to leave.

“Miss Wolfsbane,” Count Lorenz called suddenly.

    She stopped.

“What’s the rush?” His tone shifted. “There is… another way, if you want to keep the debt arrangement the way it used to be.”

    Sofina frowned and turned back.
    “What do you mean?”

Lorenz narrowed his eyes, his gaze roaming over her without restraint.

Sofina was strikingly beautiful—so much so that it made his breath hitch.

“You came all this way to ask for a favor,” he said slowly. “We can discuss it properly. I’m not as unreasonable as you think.”

After a moment’s hesitation, Sofina sat back down, a flicker of hope rising in her chest.

“Mr. Stahl,” she asked cautiously, “will you continue supplying the materials?”

“Yes,” he replied with a nod. “But first—you’ve been here for a while, and I haven’t even offered you a drink.”

He stood and retrieved an ornate teapot from the cupboard.

“This is a rare tea from Xia,” he said casually. “It’s said to relieve stress and improve the complexion. Once reserved for royalty. You should try it.”

As it brewed, a rich, soothing aroma filled the room.

Lorenz placed the cup in front of her, smiling.

What he didn’t tell her was that it wasn’t just tea. It was laced with a potent drug meant to strip away restraint and cloud judgment.

“Relax, Miss Wolfsbane,” he said softly. “Let’s have some tea and talk things through.”

After all the conversation, Sofina felt parched. Without much thought, she lifted the cup and drank it in one go.

“Thank you, Count Lorenz,” she said, setting it down. “It’s quite good.”

Lorenz’s pulse quickened as he watched her empty the cup.

    It worked.

With evidence to send to his superiors, his position would be secure. With their backing, no one would dare question what happened within these walls.

    Then something went wrong.

    Sofina stiffened.

A sudden, overwhelming heat surged through her body, rushing to her head. Her breathing grew uneven as her gaze drifted toward Count Lorenz against her will. For a terrifying instant, her thoughts felt blurred, her senses distorted.

She bit her lip hard, fighting for clarity.

“Count Lorenz,” she said unsteadily, “something’s wrong with me. I feel… hot. All of a sudden.”

“Good,” Lorenz replied smoothly, his smile sharpening. “If you want your materials delivered without trouble, we can start by settling things properly. What do you say?”

“No… I mustn’t,” Sofina whispered, even as her body betrayed her resistance.

The most terrible betrayal was when one’s own body turned against the will of the soul.

    Lorenz’s grin widened.

This time, he believed, his plan had truly succeeded.
