Alex was at home when Oskar called.

“Sir,” Oskar said, “how do you want to proceed with Anton Dunkel?”

Alex lay back on the bed, staring at the ceiling. After a moment, he replied flatly, “He wanted me dead over a cheap money scheme involving Leonora. That’s hardly worth killing him over, don’t you think?”

“No, sir,” Oskar answered. “We’ll drain him dry—every last cent. Then we take his land.”

Alex’s expression hardened. “Marquis Anton Dunkel controls a major state. It borders Xia territory. Do you really think we can handle that?”

“Of course,” Oskar said without hesitation. “Our underground network includes many Xia nationals who still have deep ties back home. They know the terrain, the systems, the routes. Their families are there—and for them, family comes first. They’ll execute it perfectly.”

Alex fell silent. He had money—more than enough—but in Prussia, money alone didn’t equal power.

Taking Dunkel’s territory wouldn’t be easy. But he didn’t need everything at once. A slice here, a corridor there. Control always started small, then spread. Power always did.

“What about Gaia’s prediction?” Alex asked.

Oskar smiled, calm and assured. “Gaia gives us an eighty-five percent chance of absorbing all of Dunkel’s territory within three months—and a ninety-nine percent chance within a year.”

Alex smiled faintly. “Then start devouring everything.”

Conquering Prussia was never simple. But when artificial intelligence controlled logistics, modeled human behavior, and calculated outcomes down to the smallest variable, time became the only requirement.

Given enough time, victory was inevitable.

A knock sounded at Alex’s bedroom door. He ended the call.

“Enter,” Alex said, too lazy to get up.

Pauline stepped inside and glanced around. “Where’s Sofina?”

“She’s busy,” Alex replied. “Probably won’t be back until late. If you need her, wait until morning.”

Pauline hesitated, then asked, “Alex… when are you going to buy me a car?”

“Never,” Alex said without blinking.

She frowned, clearly annoyed, then changed the subject and left the room, closing the door behind her.

Across the city, Renata walked out of the hospital, anger burning in her chest.

Winchester felt cold. Empty. She had no real friends here—no one she could truly rely on. The realization only darkened her mood.

Freshly discharged, she wanted a celebration. A loud place. Good food. Strong drinks. Anything to drown out the frustration pounding in her head and mark her return to freedom.

Without thinking, she called Sofina—but Sofina was buried in work and wouldn’t be free until very late.

Renata couldn’t wait that long.

She considered calling Alex. The thought lingered—then she dismissed it. It would feel wrong. Wrong to Sofina. Wrong to herself. And besides, she’d already sent him several messages.

That asshole hadn’t even replied.

Perfect bastard, she thought bitterly. I’m the Duke’s daughter—someone men line up to chase—and this so-called Marquis from a fallen family dares to ignore me?

Did he have any idea how many people were desperate to win her favor?

Renata let out a long sigh, disappointment settling heavy on her shoulders.

Then she heard a voice.

“Renata!”

She looked up to see Gerhard Wolfsbane—Sofina’s cousin—grinning as he waved.

“I heard you were discharged today,” he said cheerfully. “How about dinner? I’ll accompany you.”

Renata’s eyes turned cold.

She had never liked Gerhard. Not once. Every word, every smile felt calculated. He didn’t care about her recovery—only her title, her value.

Normally, she would have rejected him outright. But today she was exhausted, angry, and painfully aware of how alone she felt.

Gerhard sensed it immediately.

“Today should be celebrated,” he said smoothly. “You’re finally out of the hospital.”

“I’m not in the mood,” Renata replied.

He leaned closer, lowering his voice. “Winchester can be lonely. You don’t have many friends here.”

The words stung.

“I’ve already reserved a table,” he continued. “Quiet place. Nothing tiring.”

Renata hesitated.

“You look like someone who doesn’t want to go home alone,” Gerhard said gently.

Her jaw tightened. “Don’t flatter yourself.”

“I’m not,” he replied. “Just being honest.”

Silence stretched between them.

“I don’t like you,” Renata said flatly.

He nodded. “I know.”

“Then why won’t you leave me alone?”

“Because tonight,” he said softly, “you look like you need company.”

For the first time, her resistance wavered. Loneliness spared no one—not even a duke’s daughter.

“…One dinner,” she said finally. “That’s it.”

Gerhard smiled—slow and satisfied.

“You won’t regret it.”

Renata exhaled, eyes distant.

Better with someone than alone.
Even if that someone was wrong.
