Chuck was chained from his arms to his legs, restrained so thoroughly that reaching her was impossible. That didn’t stop him from trying.

The moment he lunged forward, Taylor reacted. He stepped directly into Chuck’s path, snarling as his wolf surged to the surface. As a Beta, Taylor’s strength far outmatched Chuck’s natural wolf, and between that and the enchanted chains, Chuck was forced back with a furious growl.

“What’s going on?” Irene asked, tears instantly filling her eyes. “Why is he here? Why is he chained like that?”

She turned toward me, desperation written all over her face, and it shattered my heart. She truly had no idea what was happening. From her perspective, it looked like we had kidnapped her mate and were holding him hostage.

Nothing could have been further from the truth.

Her real mate was outside, waiting for this nightmare to end—just as soon as Irene was forced to face the truth. What Chuck had put her through was already horrific. What she was about to learn would finally explain everything.

“Irene,” I said gently, stepping closer, “I promise you—it’s not what it looks like.”

Her breathing began to speed up, shallow and uneven. Panic crept into her eyes as she turned back toward Chuck—the man who had done all of this to her, even if she didn’t realize it yet. He was snarling, rage radiating from him.

“Irene, don’t listen to them,” Chuck said through clenched teeth. “I love you. We were made for each other.”

“Love?” Nan scoffed, shaking her head. “Is that what you call cheating on her with a woman from your pack? Or did you forget we already uncovered the truth? What did you say to her to make her forget?”

“He told me it was a mistake,” Irene said quickly, looking at Nan. “That the girl was insane. He said he only ever loved me… that she blackmailed him and lied about them being mates. Right, Chuck?”

She turned to him, searching for reassurance.

“Exactly,” Chuck said smoothly, still lying without hesitation. “I’m Irene’s real mate. She’s mine.”

“What are you really after?” I asked, folding my arms across my chest. “You don’t go through all of this unless you need something from her.”

“That’s not fair,” Irene snapped, turning on me. Tears streamed freely now. “He didn’t do anything wrong. Is this why I haven’t heard from him in days? Because you’ve had him locked up here?”

“Yes,” Chuck said immediately, cutting us off. “That’s exactly it. I would never ghost you, baby. I love you.”

“I love you too,” Irene sobbed. “Please, Taylor—let him go. Does my father know about this?”

“Yes,” Taylor said calmly, his gaze never leaving Chuck. “He knows everything.”

“What?” Irene’s voice went hollow. “Did he make you do this? My father never liked him, but Chuck deserves a chance. He’s my mate—”

“No,” Cora said firmly. “He’s not.”

She stood beside Esme, both of them dressed in deep purple. Esme’s long silver hair framed her face, while Cora’s tightly curled auburn hair was pulled back neatly. Their eyes—nearly identical shades of green—were sharp and unyielding. They were breathtaking, powerful.

Esme didn’t look like someone who spent her days in a wheelchair or someone who couldn’t speak. She looked strong. Whole. Capable.

When her gaze met mine, a small smile tugged at the corner of her lips. Relief flooded my chest, and I finally released a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding.

“W-what… what the hell is going on?” Irene whispered, stumbling back a step.

“I’ll tell you exactly what’s been going on,” Cora said, her eyes narrowing as she looked at Chuck. “You haven’t been honest with her, have you?”

“Who the hell are you?” Chuck snapped, venom lacing his words.

“Tell us, Chuck,” Cora continued coolly. “How much money have you stolen from Irene? What insider information were you trying to extract from her? And what have you already succeeded in getting?”

The color drained from Chuck’s face.

In that moment, I knew—Cora had hit the mark dead-on.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Chuck muttered, but his confidence was crumbling.

Taylor shook his head. “Cora uncovered everything, Chuck. You might not have told us the full truth during interrogation, but that didn’t matter once we involved two extremely talented witches.”

Esme reached into the bag she was holding and pulled out a document, holding it up for Irene to see.

“Bank transfers,” Cora said quietly. “Every transaction Irene sent to him in the past month alone. She gave him nearly everything she had—and more.”
