Lila smiled at herself in the mirror, smoothing the soft fabrics of her dress. Tonight, she would host a party for her supporters, showing them just how much she appreciated their loyalty.

“Miss Lila, you look stunning,” Olivia, one of her most devoted followers, cooed from behind her. “Everyone is going to love you.”

“I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without you, Olivia,” Lila said, turning to face her. “You’ve rallied so much of the pack behind me, and for that, I truly thank you.”

Olivia blushed.

“I don’t want that orphan to be our Luna,” she said, frowning. “She’ll make a terrible Luna. She wasn’t trained for this, and she’ll be the downfall of our pack. I only want what’s best for everyone, and that’s you. Now that your family is out of hiding, it’s time to make you even more well-known.”

Lila’s smile widened as she placed a hand on Olivia’s shoulder.

“You’re too kind,” she said softly, then withdrew her hand. “I truly do appreciate you, Olivia. Your friends’ efforts are appreciated too. Pretty soon, Gavin will see that I’m the perfect match for him, and he’ll leave Judy behind. He cares about this pack more than anything, and once he sees that I’m a better Luna, he’ll come straight to me.”

Both girls laughed.

“We should get to the party, then,” Olivia said. “Your guests are all waiting for the woman of the hour.”

Lila’s cheeks flushed as a thrill of anticipation filled her chest. She kept her composure as she stepped toward the door leading to the party room. Her brothers were already there, still in disbelief that she wasn’t really their sister.

Rounding the corner, she froze at a familiar sight.

Daisy Baldwin was serving drinks on trays, wearing only a collar. Her appearance was jarring—thinner than usual, hair messy, makeup smudged. She was completely naked.

Judy’s POV

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Nan asked as we finished getting ready. We were about to attend Lila’s party in neutral territory.

“At this point, I’m not sure about anything,” I admitted. “But this is my pack, and I can’t let her win.”

Nan nodded, placing a hand on my shoulder and squeezing gently.

“You’re going to be an amazing Luna, Judy,” she said with a soft smile. She knew my anxieties about stepping into the role. For once, I allowed myself to believe I might be up to the task.

I cared deeply for Gavin and his territory. I cared for the people around me. Protecting them—that had always been why I became a gamma. Perhaps being Luna was just an extension of the same responsibility.

“Thanks, Nan,” I said, wrapping an arm around her. “You’re a really good friend.”

She smiled and nudged me playfully.

“I’m the best. Don’t forget it,” she teased.

“Never,” I said with a grin. “Sorry for pulling you away from your restaurant again.”

“It’s fine. I just hired a new closer, so I don’t need to be there tonight. Chester’s on standby if anything happens. I’m just glad your parents could watch Emalyn on such short notice.”

“You know they love that little girl,” I said with a laugh. “They treat her like their granddaughter. You practically grew up with them too.”

Nan blushed, and a knock on the door drew our attention. My mother stood there, looking between us with a hesitant smile.

“You girls look beautiful,” she said, tears brimming in her eyes. “Sorry, I’m just… feeling a little emotional. Nan, do you mind if I speak with Judy alone before you leave?”

“Of course,” Nan replied, turning back to me. “I’ll see you downstairs.”

I nodded as she left, leaving me alone with my mother. I hadn’t had a chance to talk to her after our argument last night, and guilt churned in my stomach. I knew my parents loved me—they always had. I should have trusted them, knowing they wouldn’t intentionally hurt me.
