Seducing My Ex’s Father In Law Chapter 884
Nan returned to her phone call with Chester, finishing their goodbyes before hanging up and slipping her phone back into her purse.
Erik remained silent, and I couldn’t tell whether he agreed with Nan or not.
“The longer we wait, the worse this could get,” I said quietly after a moment. “I don’t want to risk that.”
Erik pulled up to the villa and parked in front of the doors. He didn’t move right away. His face was stoic, his eyes fixed on the large windows ahead, as if he were lost in thought.
“That’s not something we want to risk… right?” I asked. The question was meant for Erik, and he seemed to know it because he glanced at me through the rearview mirror.
“No,” he said softly. “I don’t want to risk it. But I also don’t want to force Irene to be with me if that’s not what she wants.”
The pain in his voice made my chest tighten.
Without another word, he got out of the car and slammed the door shut. I didn’t wait for him to open ours. I stepped out just as he reached for the handle, and Nan followed, folding her arms across her chest.
“So what do we do?” Nan asked, looking between the two of us. “Because it feels like we’re at a crossroads.”
The front door of the villa opened, and Adam stood in the entryway, a faint frown pulling at his lips as his gaze swept over us. He looked skeptical—like he’d walked in on something we weren’t supposed to be doing.
“Welcome back,” he said, dipping his head toward me before stepping aside.
We entered, and once the door shut behind us, Adam returned to his post. I shook my head at his retreating form and turned back to Nan and Erik, both of them lost in their own thoughts.
“I want to help Irene in every way I can,” I said, my voice wavering as tears threatened to spill. “I might fail as a Luna—but I will not fail my friend. Every second we wait, she’s slipping further away.”
My emotions were getting the better of me, and I blamed the pregnancy entirely.
“I need you both on my side,” I said. “I need you to tell me that this is the right thing to do.”
Something surged inside me then, grounding me. I knew—without a doubt—that I was telling the truth.
“What are you guys talking about?” Matt asked as he came down the stairs. “Is everything okay with Irene?”
“She’s fine,” Nan said quickly, trying to reassure him.
“No,” I said at the same time.
Matt frowned, his gaze flicking between us. A small crease formed between his brows.
“I knew it,” he said, his expression twisting into something unfamiliar.
“Knew what?” I asked gently.
“I knew something was wrong,” he said, looking at me. “I asked her if she was okay, but she brushed me off and said she was fine. But… I heard her crying almost all night.”
The worry in his eyes tugged painfully at my heart. We were all worried—but Matt was only nine years old. He shouldn’t have to carry this kind of weight. I hated that he’d been forced to grow up so fast.
I rested my hand on his shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze.
“You’ve always been very perceptive, Matt,” I said softly. “Irene is lucky to have you as her brother. You look out for her—even if she can’t see it right now. One day, she’ll thank you for it.”
He shrugged.
“She and my dad are the only family I have,” he said quietly. “Now that I have a wolf and know how to fight, I want to protect them.”
“Aww, Matt,” Nan said, pressing a hand to her chest. “That’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard.”
I ran my fingers through his messy hair and pulled him into a hug.
“They’re not the only family you have,” I told him softly. “I’m your family. My family is your family. And my friends are your family too.”
He looked up at me with a watery smile.
“Really?” he asked.
I nodded.
“Really,” I said. “I love you, Matt. Your father loves you. And Irene loves you.”
“I love you too,” he said, wrapping his arms tighter around my middle.
I smiled down at him.
“Now—for once—stop worrying about adult things and let the adults handle them,” I said gently as he pulled back. “Just be a kid, Matt.”
“I’m not sure I know how,” he admitted, looking a little sheepish.
I let out a soft laugh. “Seems like we all have a lot to learn.”
He nodded, then looked up at me again.
“Can you do me a favor, Judy?” he asked.
“Of course.”
“Whatever’s happening with Irene… save her,” he said, his voice thick with worry.
Determination surged through me.
“I will,” I promised. “I swear.”
I looked at Erik and Nan. They returned my gaze—and in that moment, I knew our minds were made up.
