Seducing My Ex’s Father In Law Chapter 881
More complicated…
That was exactly what I needed right now.
I stared down at my hands, a tingling sensation buzzing at my fingertips. I had magic—real magic—and I could feel its power raging inside me, restless, desperate to be unleashed.
“As the host of magic, you are the most powerful being in this world,” Esme continued. “Without you, magic dies.”
“Why me?” I asked, still struggling to process everything. “Why was I chosen to be the host of magic?”
“It’s because you’re a Blackwell,” Selene said. “The Moon Goddess chooses a new host every fifty years, and it’s always a Blackwell. But there was a prophecy about you. It foretold your birth. You were said to be stronger than any host before you—and not just the host of magic, but the Moon Goddess’s chosen daughter as well.”
My heart stopped.
“Chosen daughter?” Irene asked, frowning. “Wouldn’t that make her the high priestess?”
“There hasn’t been a high priestess in over a century,” Nan added. “I remember learning about her in one of my classes. Wasn’t she treated terribly?”
Esme nodded.
“Yes,” she said softly, almost sadly—like she was remembering someone she’d known personally, though that couldn’t be possible. This had happened centuries ago. “She was my great-great-great-great-grandmother. The Moon Goddess called her home early because the world wasn’t ready for her yet.”
“And she thinks the world is ready now?” I asked. “Why me? I still don’t understand.”
“She chose you before you were even born,” Selene said, resting a hand on my shoulder and giving it a gentle squeeze.
“I don’t get it,” I said quietly. “Who was the host before me?”
“I was,” Esme replied. “My powers were transferred to you the moment Selene became pregnant.”
“I took your powers?” My eyes widened.
“These powers were never mine to keep,” she said with a faint smile. “I was only holding them until the Moon Goddess chose a new host. Between being the host of magic and her chosen daughter, that amount of power was too much for an infant. You were developing rapidly, and Selene could feel how strong you were before she was even four months along. That’s why we had to take your powers when you were born. Otherwise, they would have devoured you.”
I let out a shaky breath, my head spinning from everything I’d just learned.
“This is too much,” I said, shaking my head. “I didn’t ask for any of this. What am I supposed to do?”
“You’ll find out when the time is right,” Esme replied. “But for now, you need to learn control. Magic is sensitive. It has a will of its own, and it needs to trust you. Once the time comes for you to use it fully, controlling it will be difficult. It usually takes years of practice. Cora is a witch—strong and skilled. She can help you learn.”
“Why couldn’t Cora just be the host?” I asked. “She already knows magic. This doesn’t make sense.”
“Because she wasn’t chosen,” Esme said simply. “Though she was still generously gifted through the Blackwell bloodline.”
I looked at Esme.
“Why couldn’t the Moon Goddess just let you stay the host longer? Why did she have to give me your magic?”
“Because of the prophecy.”
“The one about my future?” I asked.
“No,” Esme said quietly. “The one that foretold my death.”
“What?” I whispered.
Esme sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose. Selene looked down, lips pressed into a thin line.
“There was a prophecy about my death,” Esme said. “I will not live past the age of eighty.”
My chest tightened painfully.
“And I’m seventy-nine now,” she added.
“You’re… going to die next year?” I asked, my voice barely audible.
She nodded.
“It took me a long time to accept it,” she said. “But eventually, I did. So did the rest of the family.” She glanced at Selene, who looked like she was barely holding herself together. “Do you want to know how it happens?”
I swallowed hard and nodded.
“A disease,” Esme said. “It acts quickly. Impossible to detect until it’s too late. And even if it’s caught early, the chances of survival are slim.”
“There has to be something they can do,” I said desperately, shaking my head. “You can’t just accept this. The Moon Goddess warned you—you’re supposed to protect yourself.”
Esme shook her head slowly.
“The Goddess doesn’t send prophecies as warnings,” she said. “She sends them to inform us of what is. These prophecies are fragments of the future written in the stars. They aren’t meant to be changed—only accepted and adapted to. She has called me home, which means my purpose here is finished. I must return to where I’m needed most.”
“So that’s it?” I asked, looking at Selene. “And you’re all okay with this? You’re not even trying to find a way to save her?”
“Of course we tried,” Selene said, finally looking at me. The pain in her eyes was unmistakable. “We tried everything. Zachary was a mess for a long time. We were all in denial. But eventually, we accepted it. Now, we’re just grateful for the time we have left with her—especially now that she can speak again.”
