“I’ll make room for her,” Eliza said. “I’ll just need a signed release from the hospital. Since Gavin is a Lycan Chairman, we won’t need approval from the Churchill family.”

I nodded, relieved I wouldn’t have to deal with any of them. I’d had more than enough of that family for one lifetime.

“I’ll go with you to get the release,” I said, reluctantly stepping away from Judy. “Will you be okay here alone for a minute?”

She nodded and gave me a small, reassuring smile.

“Thank you for doing this,” she said softly.

I brushed a dark strand of hair behind her ear and cupped her face gently.

“I’d do anything for you,” I told her, then leaned in and kissed her, taking a moment to ground myself in her presence.

She melted into me, deepening the kiss just slightly before pulling back. Her cheeks were flushed, and God—she was beautiful.

I forced myself to step away and followed Eliza to the nurses’ station. Two women stood behind the counter, gossiping and laughing about something clearly unrelated to work. I rolled my eyes. If they were part of my pack, they’d already be gone.

But this was neutral ground. I couldn’t touch them.

Instead, I planted my hands on the counter and stared them down.

“If you two are done spreading gossip,” I said sharply, “I need a signed release form for Megan Churchill.”

They both startled.

“Oh shit,” one of them whispered, eyes widening. “That’s Gavin Landry.”

“The most powerful Lycan Chairman?” the other asked, just as stunned.

“Yes,” the first said faintly. “I’ve seen him in magazines…”

“And is that Eliza Pierce?” the second added. “One of the best doctors in the world? What is she doing in a place like this?”

“How about you stop asking questions and do what I asked,” I cut in, my patience thinning. “We don’t have much time, and we’d like to leave as soon as possible.”

“Yes—of course,” the first woman said quickly, bowing her head. “I’m Jamie. This is my coworker, Abby.”

“We don’t care,” I replied bluntly. “We’re in a hurry.”

Jamie nodded fast, tucking a strand of red hair behind her ear.

“Of course, Alpha. I’m sorry for the delay,” she said, rushing to the computer to prepare the paperwork.

“If I may ask,” Abby said hesitantly, “why the sudden interest in Miss Churchill? She’s… not exactly favored here. We were told she’s penniless and means nothing to the Churchill family. As long as appearances are kept and she looks monitored, they don’t really care what happens to her.”

My jaw tightened.

“That’s none of your business,” I said flatly.

She pressed her lips together and nodded.

“Yes, sir. Sorry for prying.”

Jamie returned moments later with a document.

“Here’s the release form,” she said, handing it to me. “It just needs her doctor’s signature. Dr. Lipton is on the third floor right now with a terminal patient.”

“We’ll go now,” I said, already turning away.

Eliza followed me to the elevator. Minutes later, we were standing outside Dr. Lipton’s room. He was an elderly man with thick glasses and deep lines etched into his face, the weight of exhaustion evident in his posture. He looked startled when he saw us, stepping out before we even had the chance to knock.

“Alpha Landry?” he asked, eyes wide. “W–what do we owe the honor of this visit?”

“I need you to sign this,” I said without preamble, holding out the form. “It’s a release for Megan Churchill.”

His eyes widened further as he read it.

“I’m afraid the Churchills forbade her release,” he said carefully. “They paid—”

“Whatever they paid, I’ll double it,” I interrupted without hesitation. “Send the bill to my beta. It’ll be covered.”

His jaw dropped.

“Are you certain, Alpha?” he asked. “Megan isn’t really worth that kind of money.”

“She’s important to my mate,” I said coldly. “Which makes her important to me. Sign the papers.”

It wasn’t a request.

He took the pen from my hand and signed. I snatched the form back and turned to leave. Eliza followed close behind, her head lowered.

“You should know, Alpha,” Dr. Lipton called after me. “Megan Churchill is dangerous. If she ever wakes from this coma… I fear what she might do to the world.”

I paused for half a second.

Then I kept walking.

I needed to get back to my mate.
