I didn’t like the idea of Megan Churchill spending twenty-three years in a hospital—kept alive by machines alone. Gavin decided that bringing Eliza with us would help; she could tell us exactly what was wrong with Meg and how we might fix it.

Maybe then we could bring Meg home and introduce her to her daughter.

On the drive to the packhouse, I filled Gavin in a little. It was already evening, so we knew Eliza and Taylor would likely be there by now. I told him about the curse and why we needed to reach Meg as soon as possible.

Gavin pulled into the packhouse driveway and parked. After a brief silence, he got out, circled the car, and opened the passenger door for me, holding out his hand.

My cheeks warmed as I took it, letting him pull me to my feet. I stood close—too close—and my eyes widened at his sudden proximity as the heat in my face deepened.

“I have a few more for the protest,” a familiar voice said from behind the nearby shrubs.

The bushes nearly concealed us, but the voices carried clearly, as though they were right beside me.

“They don’t want her as our Luna either.”

“Good,” another familiar voice replied. “She wouldn’t make a good Luna. Alpha Gavin needs to see that. He should choose someone more in his league—someone we can trust.”

“Save it for the rally,” the first voice chuckled. “We need to get back to work so we can go home.”

Their voices faded as they walked away.

I stood frozen.

Gavin’s gaze never left my face. I didn’t need to look at his eyes to know they had darkened, or how tightly he was holding himself in check.

“What the hell was that?” he asked, his voice low and dangerous.

I swallowed hard and kept my eyes down, shame weighing heavy in my chest.

“That was the she-wolves of your pack,” I murmured. “They don’t want me as Luna.”

My cheeks burned again—this time for an entirely different reason.

“How long has this been going on?” he asked. “You’re not surprised, which tells me you’ve heard this before.”

I bit my lower lip, worrying it slowly.

“Yes,” I whispered. “I’ve heard them talk like this before.”

“Oh—hey, Gavin. Hey, Judy,” Eliza called as she stepped out of a newly parked car.

I blinked, not even realizing another vehicle had arrived.

Beta Taylor exited from the driver’s side as Eliza stepped out of the passenger seat. She looked exhausted, and the white trench coat told me she’d just come from work. Still, she smiled warmly at me.

“Hey, Eliza,” I said. “Beta Taylor.”

Taylor smiled back, slipping an arm around his mate.

“Everything okay?” he asked, glancing between Gavin and me. “You two look like you were in the middle of something intense.”

“Actually,” Gavin said, his eyes settling on Eliza, “I need to borrow your mate for a few hours. We’ve got a situation in Yellowstone.”

Eliza lifted her brows and looked at Taylor.

“I suppose our night alone will have to wait,” she said with a soft sigh. “I’m sorry, my love.”

Taylor sighed too, then leaned in to kiss her cheek.

“One of these days, I’ll get you all to myself,” he promised. “And I won’t let you out of bed.”

“You two are sickeningly cute,” I said, smiling despite myself.

They both laughed.

“So what’s going on?” Eliza asked.

“We’ll explain on the way,” Gavin said. “But it’s important. I wouldn’t pull you away this late if it wasn’t.”

She nodded, understanding clear on her face.

“Okay. Let me grab a few things,” she said, gesturing toward the packhouse. “I’ll be right back.”

“I’ll come with you,” Taylor said, jogging alongside her.

Their voices faded as they disappeared inside.

Gavin turned back to me, concern written all over his face. My heart tightened in my chest.

“It’s okay,” I said quickly, before he could speak. “Irene’s been helping me—teaching me how to be more Luna-like. I’ll prove to them that I can be a good Luna.”

Gavin’s eyes widened.

“That’s why you’ve been taking lessons?” he asked.

My cheeks heated as I realized what I’d just admitted.

“Yes,” I said softly. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner. I didn’t want to cause problems in your pack. You already have so much on your plate. I thought this was one thing I could handle on my own.”

I lifted my head, finally meeting his gaze.

“I’ll win them over with kindness. I’ll prove to them that I can be a good Luna.”
