Seducing My Ex’s Father In Law Chapter 861
Daisy rolled her eyes at my last comment, then shook her head as if pushing the memory aside before looking back at me.
“I had a feeling she wasn’t the true host,” Daisy said, exhaling slowly. “After the second attempt, I kept thinking it shouldn’t be this hard. Magic wants to return to its host. It forms attachments—just like the host does to the magic. So when her attempts failed again and again, something felt off. But every time you were nearby, the gem would glow brighter, stronger. I put the pieces together on my own. I’m honestly surprised it took you that long.”
“Do you really want to talk to me like that right now?” I asked, lifting a brow. “Let’s rewind for a second. Why would you even want to break your mate bond? I thought once you were marked, the connection was almost the same as true mates.”
“It’s not as strong as a true mate bond,” she admitted. “But that’s not the problem. The man I’m mated to is a monster.”
My mouth fell open.
“A monster?”
She let out a laugh, hollow and sharp.
“Do you know what it’s like to be tied to someone who only thinks about themselves? We have a full bond. I can feel everything he feels, hear every thought he has. His thoughts are so loud I can’t shut them out, and his emotions are so dark they drown out everything else.”
Tears welled in her dark blue eyes as she stared at me, and I felt completely stunned. Had I been wrong about Daisy Baldwin all this time?
“He has this strange ability to block my emotions,” she went on, her voice shaking. “So he doesn’t have to feel my ‘pointless’ feelings.” The way she said it made it painfully clear those words had come straight from him. “He also comes from a rare bloodline that allows him to take multiple mates at once. Every time he’s intimate with another woman, it hurts. But when he actually mates with someone else…” Her voice broke. “I want to die. I sleep for days afterward. The pain is so deep it feels like it’s tearing me apart. I wouldn’t wish that kind of punishment on my worst enemy.”
My vision blurred as tears filled my eyes. My heart ached for her, and I never thought I’d feel that way about Daisy Baldwin. Since the day I met her—right before I started working for Gavin—she’d been nothing but a thorn in my side. She’d chased Gavin relentlessly, deceived everyone around her. I didn’t know if this was another act or the raw truth.
Not knowing was the worst part.
But as Daisy wrapped her arms tighter around herself and finally sobbed, I saw it clearly. She was broken. Terrified. A prisoner in her own bond—her own mating—with no way out of the hell he’d trapped her in.
“He uses that pain—and worse—to control me,” she said quietly. “If I displease him, he mates with someone else. It’s his punishment. There were good moments,” she added, almost defensively. “Enough to keep me from ending my life when things got really dark. But the bad always outweighed the good.”
“Daisy…” I whispered, shaking my head as a tear slipped down my cheek.
She wiped her face harshly, like she was angry at herself for crying.
“And the things he made me do…” she continued. “Drug trafficking. Prostitution to satisfy his business partners. Espionage. I spied on Gavin’s territory because it was enemy land. I was pretty, recognizable, and with my family ties, no one ever suspected me. I think that’s why he chose me. When he told me to steal the Moon Gem, he promised he’d finally move me into the manor, acknowledge me as his mate, marry me. I thought things would change—that I wouldn’t have to live in fear anymore. That he’d finally love me.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “I was a fool.”
“You did steal the gem,” I said carefully. “And what manor?”
She let out a long, exhausted breath.
“I guess you should know,” she said. “The man who mated with me is Noah Blackwell.” She hesitated, then looked straight at me. “Or… I suppose you know him as your brother.”
