The room fell silent as the Blackwells entered. Taylor followed close behind, irritation etched across his face as he crossed his arms over his chest.

“I tried to stop them,” he muttered, shaking his head in frustration. “But they insisted on speaking to Judy right away.”

My gaze never left Selene. Tears shimmered in her eyes as she stared at me, and my heart clenched painfully in my chest. If everything I’d learned over the past few days was true… then Selene was my birth mother, and Zachary was my birth father.

It didn’t feel real.

But now I understood why I’d always felt drawn to her—to them. Why their home and their photographs had felt so familiar.

They were my blood. My family. And they were calling to me. Esme was calling to me.

“It’s true, then…” Selene said softly, her voice trembling through her tears. “You really are my daughter. I knew I felt a pull toward you—I just wasn’t sure. I didn’t think it was possible… but it was. You’re her… my daughter. My little girl.”

She moved to hug me, but Gavin stepped in front of me immediately, placing himself between us. A low growl rumbled from him, his wolf clearly on edge. The idea of me being in danger—real or imagined—set both of them off, and my chest tightened at his fierce protectiveness.

I placed my hand on his back, trying to calm him.

“Gavin, it’s okay,” I whispered. “They’re not going to hurt me.”

“We don’t know that,” he replied firmly, his eyes never leaving the Blackwells. “I’m not taking that chance.”

“I know they won’t,” I said, my voice steadier than I felt. “They’re my family… my real family.”

Even as I said it—and meant it—a sharp pang of guilt twisted in my chest. The Montgomerys were my family. They were the only family I’d ever known, and I loved them with my whole heart. I would never trade them for anything.

But Selene and Zachary were my blood. And part of me felt like I was finally coming home. Maybe my wolf and my spirit had known all along where I truly belonged.

“We don’t want conflict,” Zachary said to Gavin, his eyes narrowed. “We only want to speak to our daughter.”

“You didn’t even know she was your daughter five minutes ago,” Gavin shot back. “So how do we know we can trust you?”

“Because you signed a business contract naming me as your partner,” Zachary replied calmly, lifting a brow. “If you didn’t trust me at least a little, you never would have done that.”

Gavin stared at him for a long moment. I kept my hand on his back, rubbing slow, soothing circles, trying to steady both him and his wolf. I could feel his emotions spiraling, and the last thing I wanted was for him to lose control.

“It’s okay,” I murmured. “Let them talk.”

After a tense pause, Gavin finally relented and stepped aside.

Selene approached me, her eyes brimming with tears, her arms trembling as she reached for me.

“I’m so sorry we didn’t know sooner,” she whispered as she pulled me into a hug. “Our daughter…”

“I always knew something was wrong,” Zachary said quietly, running his fingers through his dark hair. “Everything changed at once—my mother stopped talking, my sister left… you felt different. I couldn’t explain it, but I felt the shift even back then. I should have looked into it more, and for that… I’m truly sorry.”

I shook my head and offered him a small smile.

“I had an incredible life,” I said honestly. “I love my family, and I love how everything turned out. I don’t think I’d be here—with Gavin—if things hadn’t happened the way they did. I’m grateful for the entire path that led me here.”

My hand drifted to my belly, warmth spreading through me.

“I wouldn’t change anything,” I added softly, a faint smile on my lips.

“Where is Lila?” Zachary asked, turning toward Taylor. “Is she being held in custody?”

“Yes,” Taylor replied. “I don’t trust her not to try something against Judy, so she’ll remain in custody until it’s safe.”

Zachary nodded, then turned back to Selene.

“I think we should speak to her as well,” he said gently. “She is the girl we raised for twenty-three years, after all.”
