Seducing My Ex’s Father In Law Chapter 844
The drive home felt longer than it should have. Gavin kept glancing at me like he expected me to disappear at any second. Honestly, I felt like I might. It was as if I were sinking into the seat, letting the world swallow me whole. I felt fragile—so breakable that even the lightest touch might shatter me.
I never expected my conversation with Cora to end the way it did. I’m not sure what I had expected, but learning that I was the heiress of the Blackwell family was far more than I could handle. The thought alone made my stomach churn.
It meant my family—my birth family—had been right under my nose the entire time. And Lila was supposed to be a Montgomery, not a Blackwell. That didn’t sit right with me either. I loved my adoptive parents. They were everything I could have ever needed and more. I knew Lila would never appreciate them the way I did… though maybe she would have, if she’d grown up with them.
Then again—would I have been different, too?
I wouldn’t have needed money. I would have had the Blackwell fortune. I wouldn’t have worked as Matt’s tutor, and I probably wouldn’t have gotten to know Gavin the way I did.
Would Lila have been the one working for him? Would she have been the one he fell in love with? The one who had his baby?
The thought made me feel sick and dizzy.
“Where did you go?” Gavin asked gently, reaching over and taking my hand, pulling me back to the present.
I blinked and looked at him.
“I just got lost in my head,” I admitted. “Everything would have been so different if we’d never been switched.”
He frowned, his thumb brushing slow circles over my knuckles.
“But you were switched. You shouldn’t torture yourself with what-ifs.”
I knew he was right, but the thoughts wouldn’t stop.
“It could have been her you fell in love with—”
“I’m going to stop you right there,” he said, a little too sharply. “Because I could never fall in love with anyone but you. You’re my mate. Your upbringing has nothing to do with that. No matter what life we lived, I would always find you.”
My heart swelled, and tears filled my eyes before I could stop them. He glanced at me, a smirk tugging at his lips.
“Are you crying?” he teased.
My cheeks burned as I wiped my eyes.
“Pregnancy hormones,” I said, laughing weakly.
“Mhm,” he replied, clearly unconvinced—but he was smiling. That smile made one spread across my face, too.
When we pulled into the villa lot, I was surprised to see Nan’s car parked outside. The moment I stepped out, she rushed down the front steps toward me, her eyes wide with worry. I could practically feel the anxiety radiating off her.
Before I could say a word, her arms wrapped around me, pulling me into a tight hug.
“Judy, you had me worried sick,” she breathed. “How could you not answer your phone? I called you a million times.”
I pulled back, frowning. She looked pale—clearly stressed. Guilt settled heavy in my chest. I hated that I’d caused her so much worry, even though I wasn’t sure how.
I reached into my bag and pulled out my phone, trying to turn it on. Nothing.
“Sorry,” I said. “Looks like my phone died.”
I shoved it back into my bag and looked at her again. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, her eyes glossy, and the weight in my chest only grew heavier.
“Is everything okay?” I asked quickly. “Is it Emalyn? Chester?”
Panic surged, my mind jumping to the worst possibilities.
“They’re fine,” she said, waving off my concern. “But Erik told me where you were going—and why. I was terrified something would happen to you.”
