Rising from the Ashes (Andrew and Lauren) Chapter 3108

Nyx and the others continued their pursuit, leaving hundreds of werewolf corpses in their wake. At last, they returned to the fortress and watched as the werewolf army retreated like a receding tide. The crisis at the fortress was finally over.

But the aftermath was far more than a field of fallen enemies.

Of the three thousand Highland warriors who had defended the fortress, nearly all had been wiped out.

Othniel and Hershel stood devastated. Hershel was still young and unable to bear the crushing weight of grief. He dropped to his knees atop the wall and roared again and again, pouring out his anguish.

    Knox said nothing.

Though his body was drenched in blood, he refused to rest. One by one, he carried the bodies of his fallen kinsmen, carefully arranging them along the wall.

Nyx watched anxiously as Andrew finally climbed back onto the fortress. His face was pale. He walked straight toward Knox.

“Stop moving them and rest for a while,” Andrew said. “At this rate, your body won’t hold up.”

Knox shook his head. “Don’t worry about me. This is what I need to do.”

Andrew frowned. “I know that’s what you want to do. But right now, what you really need to do is think about the future of the Highland Tribe. The Werewolf Progenitor, Ragnar, has already awakened. The entire tribe is hanging by a thread.”

He added flatly, “This fortress can stop the werewolf army—but it can’t stop Ragnar. Do you understand?”

Knox said nothing. He bit down hard on his lip until blood seeped out, then turned and continued carrying the bodies.

A cold glint flashed in Andrew’s eyes. “I told you to stop and rest.”

His voice hardened. “Do you really think expressing grief like this isn’t childish—or an insult to your parents? What, do you think that if you died too, everything would be over, and you’d finally be free from the pain of living?”

    Knox froze.

He spun around, glaring at Andrew with fury.

Andrew raised an eyebrow. “If I’m wrong, I’ll apologize. But don’t forget—this is your home, and those who died were your people.”

“You should live well, grow stronger, and avenge them.”

He continued coldly, “Or you can keep doing this—giving up on yourself and using self-torture to escape the pain. How you choose is up to you. I won’t try to persuade you again.”

With a dull thud, Knox clutched his head and dropped to his knees, gasping for breath. Tears poured freely as sobs broke loose.

“I never imagined the war between the Highland Tribe and the werewolves would be this brutal!” he cried. “I’d never come to the fortress before. Father protected me too well!”

“I never understood the pressure Mr. Fernsby and the others lived under—being in constant, life-or-death danger!”

His voice broke. “Today, I saw it. I really saw it. And I realized how weak and cowardly I am.”

“You’re right,” he sobbed. “I’m a coward—a worthless piece of trash who can’t do anything when his brothers die!”

He slammed his fists into the ground again and again, blood quickly covering his hands.

Andrew exhaled slowly and looked toward the distant Dark Sacred Mountain. Clouds shrouded it year-round, steeped in endless darkness—the werewolves’ stronghold.

“Knox,” Andrew said quietly, “fight like a man. Resist like a man. Never give in.”

“One day, believe me, you’ll redeem your people—and save yourself.”

As he spoke, a thin line of blood slid from the corner of Andrew’s mouth, starkly red. Blood also dripped steadily from the hand gripping his sword.

With a metallic clang, Godslayer fell to the ground.

Nyx rushed over at once and grabbed his arm. One look was enough.

Andrew’s entire body was covered in wounds. Even his internal organs had suffered severe damage.

“You…” Tears instantly welled in Nyx’s eyes.

Knox looked up. When he saw Andrew’s condition, his heart twisted painfully.

    “Are you okay?”
