Rising from the Ashes (Andrew and Lauren) Chapter 3007
Andrew rested his greatsword on his shoulder and slowly descended to the ground. His gaze fixed on Kass as he spoke coldly.
“The Cathedral and I don’t have any deep grudges. Rosemary ambushed me once in the Wraith Graveyard. By rights, given how underhanded she was, I should’ve killed her. But I didn’t. I only took Saint John’s inherited power. As for her, she brought it on herself and was killed by the Ludendorff family. That has nothing to do with me.
“Cardinal, I’m not holding back because I fear the Cathedral.
“From where I stand, you should understand this clearly: I don’t have to fight you to the death to defend Abyss City. In the worst-case scenario, I can fight your army to mutual destruction, then abandon the city and escape. You know as well as I do that while Dragonfang’s current strength may not be enough to firmly hold the city, no one here can stop us from leaving. Not you, in your injured state, and not these two angels either.
“Even if God’s Left Hand showed up, he still wouldn’t be able to capture me—though I’m not his match.”
Kass’s face was grim. His muscles twitched, but he had no rebuttal.
He knew Andrew was telling the truth.
Andrew continued, “Withdraw your troops, Cardinal. Unnecessary casualties aren’t worth it. Your real target should be the Ludendorff family, not some insignificant Abyss City. I took this city only to secure a foothold in the Outlands.
“The Cathedral is supposed to purge blasphemers, heretics, and evil. But my people and I are just trying to survive and make a living. And while Holtriens may not believe in your Lord, we still respect him.
“But if you insist on eliminating all opposition and trying to dictate to me, then we can keep fighting. Only this time, I won’t hold back. Lysander has been protected far too well by the Cathedral. And when something so carefully protected finally breaks, I imagine His Holiness the Pope would be deeply heartbroken.”
Kass fell silent for a long moment before gritting his teeth. “Fine. I can order a withdrawal. But you must promise not to obstruct our advance on Throne City, and not to launch sneak attacks from behind.”
Andrew shook his head. “I won’t make promises to anyone.
“Cardinal, get one thing straight—I’m not the one begging here. Promises are what the weak offer when they’re groveling before the strong. Unfortunately for you, neither I nor Dragonfang behind me has any need or inclination to do that.
“Your only option is to trust me, appease me, and try to win my favor—not to threaten or suppress me with the Cathedral’s authority. You should know this better than anyone: Holtriens are the most godless existence in this world.
“My father and I believe in nothing except the fists and greatsword in our hands.”
Kass’s face twitched violently. He desperately wanted to fight Andrew to the death. This brat was trampling over the dignity of the entire Cathedral army without a shred of respect. In the past, Kass would have branded Andrew a heretic on the spot and ordered a full assault to erase him completely.
But now, Lysander had only just escaped death. If Andrew hadn’t held back—and if the battle continued—Kass had no confidence he could defeat Andrew one-on-one without the support of the two angels.
And in the distance, Dragonfang’s martial god assassin, Nyx, was watching intently.
