Rising from the Ashes (Andrew and Lauren) Chapter 2810
Valerie looked at him, and her heart tightened. She stepped forward, took Andrew’s hand, and said softly, “No matter what happens, I’ll stay by your side. So don’t worry.”
“Sir, someone’s here asking to see Mr. Johnston,” an apprentice said, bowing as he presented Andrew’s handwritten letter to the figure ahead.
The man turned around. He was tall and refined, his long hair falling loosely over his shoulders. His voice was flat as he spoke. “Harlan, don’t you know Mr. Johnston is in seclusion? I already told you—he isn’t seeing anyone. Tell them to leave.”
This man was Roman Lawrence, one of Mount Lourneau’s senior elders. He was Luther’s eighth junior apprentice and currently handled Mount Lourneau’s secular affairs.
Harlan Kopernik replied respectfully, “Sir, I know Mr. Johnston is in seclusion. But Ms. Reyes has come again. Since she’s not an ordinary person, I thought it would be best to let you decide.”
Roman snorted. “So what if she’s from the Reyes family? Mount Lourneau treats everyone the same. Chetvine’s elites don’t get special privileges here. Go back and tell her Mr. Johnston won’t see her.”
Harlan hesitated, then said quietly, “Mr. Lawrence, besides Ms. Reyes, the Lloyd family’s Dragon Prince is with her as well. This is a handwritten letter from the Lloyd family’s Dragon Prince. Would you like to take a look?”
Roman’s indifferent expression instantly changed. He didn’t reach for the letter, but narrowed his eyes. “What did you say? The Lloyd family’s Dragon Prince came too?”
“Yes,” Harlan replied. “Ms. Reyes brought the Lloyd family’s Dragon Prince with her. From the looks of it, his injuries are extremely serious.”
A cryptic smile curled at the corners of Roman’s mouth. “Well, well… so he really did come. Good. Let them in.”
Harlan froze. “Aren’t you going to read the Dragon Prince’s letter?”
Roman flicked his hand, and the letter flew into his grasp. Without even glancing at it, he crushed it into dust. “Nothing worth reading. When distinguished guests arrive, we naturally receive them properly. This is a big catch. If we handle it right, the rewards will be substantial.”
Roman burst out laughing.
Harlan didn’t understand what he meant and turned to escort the visitors inside. Still, Roman’s strange smile left him deeply uneasy. It felt as though Roman, the one managing Mount Lourneau’s affairs, was plotting something—and it didn’t seem like anything good.
In the end, Harlan shook his head, telling himself he was overthinking it. Roman was a senior elder of Mount Lourneau, highly skilled and widely respected. Even Luther trusted him enough to put him in charge of daily operations. For a junior like him to speculate was only asking for trouble.
At the mountain gate, Harlan bowed. “Please, come in.”
Valerie asked eagerly, “Mr. Johnston agreed to see us?”
Harlan shook his head. “Mr. Johnston is in deep seclusion. It was Mr. Roman Lawrence who allowed you to enter.”
Valerie immediately frowned. “Mr. Lawrence? So it’s not Mr. Johnston.”
Andrew said calmly, “Either way, let’s go in and see what happens.”
Mount Lourneau truly lived up to its reputation as a prestigious sect—magnificent and imposing. Andrew and Valerie were arranged temporary lodging, and Roman was scheduled to receive them the following morning.
That only made Valerie more anxious. “No. We need to see Mr. Lawrence right now. Andrew’s injuries can’t wait.”
Harlan looked troubled. “I’m sorry, Ms. Reyes, but those are Mr. Lawrence’s instructions. You can only see him tomorrow morning. He won’t meet anyone tonight.”
Valerie opened her mouth to argue, but Andrew stopped her. “It’s fine, Valerie. Tomorrow morning is fine.”
She huffed reluctantly. “Mr. Lawrence certainly puts on airs. Mount Lourneau may be impressive, but we’re not nobodies either. Go back and tell him not to overdo the theatrics.”
Harlan left awkwardly, taking the still-blushing Noel with him.
Andrew leaned against the plain bedframe and said gently, “Valerie, you should rest too. You’ve been exhausted these past two days. Once we meet Roman tomorrow, everything will be fine.”
Valerie shook her head fiercely. “No!”
