Kyle’s POV

Thomas’s face went through a series of emotions in the amber wash of the streetlight, “You son of a bitch. You don’t get to do this.“.

“Do what, exactly?” I kept my voice level, businesslike.

“Show up here looking like death and throw your martyrdom in my face.” Thomas stepped closer,” You think you get to play the noble dying husband now?”

“I never claimed to be noble.”

“No, you just acted like it.”

Heat flared in my chest.

“I know you left Mia bleeding on marble stairs while you chased after your psychotic step–sister. I know she spent months in that hospital alone, grieving children you refused to believe were yours. I know she called your name when she was hemorrhaging after giving birth to your sons, and you weren’t there because you were too busy playing dead.”

I pressed my back against the building’s brick facade, feeling the rough edges scrape through my coat. The texture grounded me, reminded me that I still existed in physical space even when everything else felt like it was dissolving.

“I was protecting them.”

“From what? From having a father? If you weren’t sick,” Thomas said, his voice gaining strength, ” I’d beat the crap out of you right now. You’re a coward.”

Something snapped inside me. My vision narrowed to Thomas’s face, to his perfect features and his healthy complexion.

I swung without thinking, without calculating odds or consequences. My fist connected with Thomas’s jaw in a burst of pain that shot up my arm and into my shoulder.

Thomas staggered back, his hand flying to his face, blood already beginning to trickle from his split lip. For a moment he looked genuinely surprised, as if the possibility of violence hadn’t occurred to him despite his threats.

“You crazy bastard,” he said, wiping blood from his mouth with the back of his hand.

The red streak against his skin looked black in the streetlight. He straightened slowly, rolling his shoulders. His fist caught me in the stomach, driving the air from my lungs in a harsh whoosh. I doubled over, gasping, tasting copper and medicine and the acrid residue of too many cigarettes.

Before I could straighten, his second punch connected with my ribs, sending lightning bolts of agony through my chest.

My knees buckled. The sidewalk rushed up to meet me, concrete scraping against my palms as I tried to break my fall. The impact jarred through my skeleton, rattling teeth that were already loose from months of chemotherapy and experimental treatments that hadn’t worked.

I rolled onto my side, coughing, feeling something warm and liquid fill my mouth. When I spat, the saliva was pink with blood.

Thomas stood over me, flexing his fingers, his chest rising and falling with controlled breaths. His knuckles were scraped, already beginning to swell, but he looked like he could continue this for hours if necessary.

“Feel better?” I asked, propping myself up on my elbows despite the fire spreading through my ribs.

“Not particularly.” Thomas wiped his mouth again, studying the blood on his hand with clinical detachment. “But at least now we’re both bleeding.”

I struggled to sit up, my back against the building’s facade, feeling pieces of brick dust and grit work their way through my coat. Every breath sent sharp spikes of pain through my chest, but nothing felt broken. Just damaged, like everything else about me.

The metallic taste of blood mixed with the lingering burn of nicotine and the sharp bite of winter air.

“Kyle.”

Mia’s voice cut through the night like a blade through silk. I looked up to see her standing in the building’s entrance, her hair disheveled from sleep, wearing an oversized sweater over pajama pants and no shoes despite the December cold. Her eyes moved between Thomas and me.

“What the hell is wrong with you two?” She stepped onto the sidewalk, her bare feet pale against the dark concrete.”

She crouched beside me, her fingers automatically reaching for the cut on my lip.

“Mia-“Thomas started, but she cut him off with a look.

“Thomas, you’re out here brawling with a dying man?”

The words ‘dying man‘ hit.

“And you,” Mia turned to me, her voice gaining strength with each word. “You absolute disaster. You expect me to feel sorry for you?”

I opened my mouth to respond, but Mia wasn’t finished.

“If you want to die, Kyle, that’s your choice. But you will not do it outside my building.”

“Both of you need to grow up,” she continued, her breath forming small clouds in the frigid air. ” Thomas, go home. Cool off. We’ll talk later.”

Thomas touched his split lip gingerly, his eyes moving between Mia and me. “Mia,”

“I am okay.” Mia’s voice carried the finality of a judge’s gavel. “Whatever you two think you’re fighting about, it’s over. Thomas, go home.”

Thomas nodded slowly, his movements careful and controlled. He straightened his coat, wiped the last traces of blood from his mouth, and walked to the curb where his car was parked. But before he got in, he walked back to Mia, ignoring me completely.

He kissed her forehead, a gentle press of lips against skin that lasted exactly long enough to make his point. His hand rested briefly on her shoulder, fingers trailing down her arm.

“Call me if you need anything,” he said quietly, his voice pitched low enough that it was clearly meant for her alone.

The car door slammed with a finality that echoed off the surrounding buildings. Thomas’s engine turned over with the expensive purr of German engineering, and then he was gone, taillights disappearing into the river of late–night traffic.

“Can you stand up?”

I tested my weight against the building’s wall, feeling the sharp protest from my ribs and the liquid fire in my chest. Everything hurt, but nothing was broken that hadn’t been broken before.
