Another pause. “I can try to reach him, but I can’t guarantee he’ll agree to see you.”

She picked up her phone and dialed an extension. I could hear it ringing, once, twice, three times.

“Mr. Branson? This is Carol from patient services. I have someone here who says she’s your ex- wife… Yes, she said Mia… I see. Are you sure?… Alright, I’ll let her know.”

She hung up and looked at me with something that might have been sympathy. “He said to tell you he’s in room 847.”

The eighth floor was quiet except for the usual hospital sounds: the beeping of monitors, the soft swoosh of ventilation systems, the distant murmur of nurses at their stations. I followed the room numbers down a carpeted hallway that smelled like disinfectant and the particular sadness of places where people came to be fixed.

He wore regular clothes- dark jeans and a gray sweater that hung loosely on his frame–but there was an IV stand beside him with a line running to his left arm. The light from the hallway fell across his face, and I could see how dramatically he’d changed since the last time I’d seen him without the Jackson Maxwell disguise.
