The Unwanted Wife and Her Secret Twins Chapter 298

    What Gentlemen do

    Mia’s POV

“Get in the car,” I said to my sons.

“Can we get Gas first?” Alexander bounced on his toes. “He’s probably lonely at home.”

“And dogs need fresh air too,” Ethan added. “It’s important for their mental health.”

Despite everything, I found myself smiling at Ethan’s concern for our dog’s psychological well–being. “Fine. We’ll get Gas.”

“Maybe we could drive to the ocean!” Alexander exclaimed. “I want to see if the water really goes on forever like in the pictures.”

“It doesn’t go on forever,” Ethan corrected with four–year–old authority. “It goes around the whole world and then comes back to where it started. That’s called the water cycle.”

“But how do you know it comes back?” Alexander challenged. “What if it just keeps going and going until it falls off the edge?”

“There is no edge, Alexander. The Earth is round.”

    “Prove it.”

I listened to their debate with half my attention while navigating through Manhattan traffic.

Gas greeted us at the apartment door with his usual enthusiasm, tail wagging so hard his entire body wiggled. The boys immediately attacked him with hugs and kisses, their high–pitched voices mixing with his excited barks.

“Gas, we’re going on an adventure!” Alexander announced, wrapping his small arms around the golden retriever’s neck. “You get to come too!”

“But first we need to get his leash,” Ethan said practically. “And maybe some water in case he gets thirsty.”

“And treats!” Alexander added. “Gas loves treats.‘

I watched them fuss over Gas. “Alright, boys,” I said, grabbing Gas’s leash from the hook by the door. “Let’s go explore.”

We piled into the car, Gas settling contentedly between the twins‘ car seats while they peppered him with

    attention.

I pressed down on the gas pedal harder than usual, and the car responded with a satisfying surge forward. The children squealed with delight as we picked up speed, their laughter filling the car like music.

“Faster, Mama!” Alexander called out, his gray eyes bright with excitement. “This is like a rollercoaster!”

“But still safe, right Mama?” Ethan asked, ever the cautious one. “You’re not going to crash us into anything?”

“Never,” I promised, catching his worried eyes in the rearview mirror. “Mama would never put you in danger.”

    Chapter 298 What Gentlemen do

We drove for what felt like hours but was probably only forty–five minutes. I spotted a bridge spanning a wide river.

“Want to stop and stretch our legs?” I asked.

“Yes!” both boys shouted in unison.

The moment I opened the car doors, Gas leaped out with enthusiasm, immediately beginning to investigate every interesting smell in the vicinity. The boys scrambled after him, their voices carrying on the evening breeze.

“Gas, come smell this flower!” Alexander called, already twenty feet away and crouched beside a patch of wildflowers growing near the water’s edge.

“Be careful near the water,” I called out.

“We will!” Ethan promised. “Mama, look at this rock! It has stripes in it!”

The cool evening air felt amazing against my skin, washing away the last vestiges of my hangover and the claustrophobic feeling that had been following me around all day. I took deep breaths, filling my lungs with the clean scent of water and growing things.

A gentle breeze picked up, ruffling my hair and making me shiver slightly. I’d only grabbed a light sweater when we left the apartment, not really thinking about how much cooler it would be near the water.

“Mama, you’re cold!” Alexander noticed immediately, his observant gray eyes missing nothing. He began struggling out of his small denim jacket. “Here, take my jacket!”

    “Oh sweetheart, I don’t need—”

“Yes you do!” He held the tiny jacket out to me with the determined expression he got when he’d made up

his mind about something. “Gentlemen always give their jackets to ladies when they’re cold. We saw it on TV.”

Ethan was already following his brother’s lead, pulling off his own small cardigan. “Alexander’s right. It’s what grown–up men do to take care of the ladies they love.” “Boys, your jackets are way too small for me,” I protested, though my heart was melting at their sweetness.

“That doesn’t matter,” Alexander said firmly, draping his jacket over my shoulders anyway. The sleeves barely reached my elbows, and it hung on me like a child’s costume, but his face beamed with pride at his chivalrous gesture.

Ethan added his cardigan to the pile, creating a ridiculous but adorable layered look. “There! Now you’ll be warm.”

“My heroes,” I said, crouching down to hug them both. “Thank you for taking such good care of me.”

“We’re the men of the family,” Alexander announced with four–year–old seriousness. “It’s our job to protect you.”

“That’s right,” Ethan agreed. “Mama works hard to take care of us, so we should take care of Mama too.”

My beautiful boys were so young, but somehow they’d absorbed the idea of love.

Gas had found something fascinating near the water’s edge and was barking excitedly.

“It’s just a stick,” Ethan announced after careful examination. “But Gas thinks it’s the best stick in the world.”

“Maybe it is the best stick in the world,” Alexander said, picking up the ordinary piece of driftwood and examining it seriously. “We can’t know for sure because we’re not dogs.”

The sun was beginning to set in earnest now, painting the sky in brilliant oranges and purples. “Five more minutes,” I called out.

“Can’t we stay until it gets dark?” Alexander pleaded. “Gas is having so much fun!”

“Gas will have fun again another day,” I promised. “But little boys need their sleep so they can grow big and strong.”

“We’re already big,” Ethan protested. For more chapters visit find{n}ovel.net

“Bigger then,” I amended. “Come on, guys. Time to head home.”

The drive back was quieter, the boys‘ energy finally starting to flag. Gas had curled up between their car seats and was already snoring softly, his adventure apparently having worn him out too.

“Mama?” Alexander’s voice was drowsy. “Can we go on more adventures?”

“Of course we can,” I said. “Anytime you want.”

“Just the three of us and Gas?”

“Just the four of us,” I confirmed.

“Good,” he said with satisfaction, his eyes already drooping. “I like adventures with just us.”

By the time we reached home, both boys were fighting sleep. I had to wake them up to get them out of the car, their little bodies heavy and warm with exhaustion.

“Come on, sleepyheads,” I said gently. “Bath time, then bed.”

“Do we have to take baths?” Ethan mumbled, leaning heavily against my leg. “Can’t we just go to bed dirty?”

“You’re covered in river mud and dog hair,” I pointed out. “You definitely need baths.”

“Mama, will you read us the story about the dragon tonight?” Alexander asked as I helped him into his pajamas.

By the time the dragon in the story had opened his successful bakery, both boys were fast asleep. I kissed their foreheads and turned off the light, leaving their door slightly ajar as always,

I took a long, hot shower, washing away the lingering stress and letting the warm water ease the tension in my

    shoulders.

When I emerged from the bathroom in my comfortable pajamas, I was looking forward to collapsing into bed with a cup of tea and maybe a mindless television show.

    I saw Alexander.

He was sitting alone on the living room sofa.

“Alexander? Sweetheart, what are you doing out here?”
