Mia’s POV

Scarlett stared at me as if I had grown a second head, “Mia, what just happened there?” she asked.

“They were planning to drug us,” I said briefly, keeping my voice low. “Date rape drugs. In our drinks. They gave the bartender five thousand dollars to put the drugs in our cocktails, and then they planned to have a few men from the neighboring hotel come over to accompany us.”

“Are you serious?” she screamed, her voice carrying across the bar and drawing fresh stares from nearby

patrons.

“Very serious. I heard them discussing it in the bathroom. They didn’t even check if there was anyone else in the bathroom.”

Scarlett’s laugh was infectious, building from a giggle to full–blown hysteria. “It’s fate! Jesus Christ, Mia. Do you realize what could have happened if you hadn’t overheard them?”

The cool evening air hit my face as we stepped outside, and I took a deep breath, trying to clear my head.

“Scarlett, are you okay?” I asked, crouching beside her to help collect her belongings.

She looked up at me, her eyes slightly unfocused. “Am I okay? Mia, you just saved us from being sexually assaulted by a group of strangers. I’m not just okay–I’m fucking grateful.”

I spotted her keys near the gutter and retrieved them, checking them for damage. “Let me drive.”

“But it’s my car,” she protested, though without much conviction.

“And you’ve had too much to drink,” I pointed out. “Besides, I think I’m more sober than you right now.”

Scarlett’s BMW was parked around the corner, sleek and black.

I adjusted the mirrors and seat position while Scarlett settled into the passenger seat, immediately reaching for her phone.

“Where to?” I asked as I started the engine.

“Find a place where we can drink some hard liquor and avoid those crazy women, and keep talking,” she said,

She turned to look at me, her expression serious despite her intoxication. “Tonight is worth it.” She even mispronounced the word ‘worth,‘ making it sound like ‘werth.‘

I pulled into traffic, keeping my speed moderate and my attention focused on the road. The last thing we needed was to get pulled over with Scarlett in this condition.

Before I could even reach the next bar, Scarlett had already fallen asleep in the passenger seat. Her breathing was deep and even, and her face looked peaceful in the passing streetlight. The stress lines around her eyes had smoothed out, making her look younger, more vulnerable.

I changed course and headed toward my apartment. It was closer than her place, and I didn’t want to leave her alone in her condition.

The building’s parking garage was nearly empty at this hour. I gently shook Scarlett’s shoulder, trying to wake her up.

I managed to get her to the elevator, though she was dead weight against my side. As the elevator climbed to my floor, Scarlett suddenly came to life, her eyes blazing with renewed fury.

“That fucking Morton!” she slurred, her voice echoing in the small space.

The entire elevator was filled with just me, Scarlett, and her constant cursing at Morton.

“Don’t defend him!” she interrupted, jabbing her finger in the air. “He knew! He had to know! Men like that always fucking know!”

We arrived at my floor, and I fumbled with my keys while supporting Scarlett’s weight. The kids were at my mom’s today, so the house was quiet and dark. I called out to Scarlett, then laid her on the sofa and helped her take off her shoes.

“Do you want some water?” I asked, loosening her jacket.

I went to the kitchen and got her a glass of iced water, adding a few lemon slices. When I returned, she was sitting up slightly, her red hair falling in waves around her face.

After drinking half the glass, she seemed a bit more awake and focused. She looked at me with those sharp green eyes that missed nothing, even when she was drunk.
