The Unwanted Wife and Her Secret Twins Chapter 282

     The Spider

    Mia’s POV

Madison lifted her head from her seat and her eyes lit up when she saw the twins.

    “Alexander! Ethan!” she whispered.

    “Hello, Madison,” Alexander said.

“Are you feeling better?” Ethan asked. “Mom said you had an allergy.”

Madison’s eyes darted toward her mother before returning to the two boys. “I’m fine.”

Thomas helped me sit down, his hand lingering on my shoulder for a moment.

The salon was getting more crowded by the minute.

Waiters moved through the rows of chairs, offering champagne and canapés to the seated guests. The lighting had been dimmed to create a more theatrical atmosphere.

I didn’t want to ruin the dinner party, but if I saw Morton or Maxwell again, I thought I might lose control and confront them.

But I didn’t see those two damn men anywhere in the crowd.

Victoria had an odd smile on her face.

It was the kind of smile that suggested something I didn’t know.

I didn’t bother to analyze it. She had chosen to sit next to me instead of Thomas, which struck m strange.

Usually, Victoria positioned herself as close to Thomas as possible.

I was sick of these dramatic people. Sick of the games.

“Mia,” Victoria leaned closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. “I heard that your ex–husband divorced you because of his true love?”

Victoria made sure only I could hear her, her lips barely moving as she spoke.

    She crossed the line.

“That’s none of your business,” I said through gritted teeth.

“You ruined your sister’s relationship, but in the end, you failed, didn’t you?” She laughed without any humor.

Her eyes glittered with malicious satisfaction.

“This has nothing to do with you… shut the fuck up.” I had no patience left.

The profanity felt good rolling off my tongue. But Victoria seemed completely unfazed by my anger. If anything, my reaction seemed to encourage her.

    Crazy woman.

“Why do you seem so reluctant to talk about this?” She first feigned confusion, tilting her head. Then her face lit up as if she’d figured something out. Original content can be found at fındnovel.net

“Oh, I see. It still hurts, doesn’t it?”

I knew it was a cheap jab.

“Oh, I forgot. Maybe because they were meant to be together.” Victoria’s voice dripped with false sympathy.” What about you? Always trying to steal other people’s happiness. Does Thomas know what a pathetic person you are?”

She was starting to get me annoyed.

Victoria didn’t care about being a good mother, but she loved malicious gossip.

I clenched my teeth and said, “If you have even a shred of maternal instinct left, stop making your daughter

    suffer.”

Victoria’s laugh was like breaking glass.

“Oh, Mia. You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Ladies and gentlemen,” a voice came over the sound system, cutting through our whispered argument.

The timing couldn’t have been better. I felt like I was about to explode.

A man in an expensive suit walked onto the stage.

He was tall, distinguished, with silver hair.

“Thank you all for joining us tonight for this very special occasion.”

The conversations around us gradually died down as people turned their attention to the stage.

“Tonight, we are honored to introduce a very special member of our community.”

    Whispers rippled through the crowd.

People shifted in their seats, craning their necks to get a better view.

The twins were fidgeting in their seats, clearly bored by the grown–up proceedings.

Alexander was making faces at Madison, trying to make her smile.

Ethan was studying the elaborate chandelier hanging from the ceiling, probably calculating its weight and wondering about the physics of keeping it suspended.

“For years, the Field family has been one of the most influential forces in American business and philanthropy.”

The man on stage continued his introduction, building suspense like a practiced showman.

“However, recent discoveries have revealed a previously unknown branch of the family tree.”

Victoria leaned closer to me again.

“This is going to be interesting,” she murmured.

Something in her tone made me look at her more carefully.

She was watching the stage with obvious anticipation.

“Please join me in welcoming Miss Sophie Field.”

The applause was polite but enthusiastic.

A woman emerged from the side of the stage.

The crowd erupted in whispers and gasps.

And I felt my blood pressure spike.

The woman walking onto the stage was someone I recognized.

Someone I’d hoped never to see again.

    Four years had changed her.

I didn’t know how she had escaped from prison and become a wealthy heiress.

Though it was clearly the same person, she seemed different.

Her hair was styled with bangs and an updo, professionally done and perfectly coiffed.

Her makeup was thick but expertly applied, emphasizing her cheekbones and making her eyes appear larger and more dramatic.

She exuded a more striking charm than I remembered.

Combined with her eye–catching designer clothing and expensive accessories, she looked absolutely stunning.

But I would recognize that face anywhere.

Seeing that face was like being completely relaxed and ready to fall asleep.

Then a spider suddenly drops onto your face.

The shock was so complete that for a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

    Taylor.

My sister Taylor was standing on that stage, wearing a fortune in jewelry and accepting applause from New

    York’s elite.

Taylor seems determined never to let me off the hook, doesn’t she?

     The Spider

Perhaps I should now call her Sophie Field.
