Mia’s POV

It’s always nice to see your account balance grow.

I reached the street level, I was already feeling celebratory.

I wanted to take my boys to an expensive restaurant tonight. The only problem was that I hadn’t made a

reservation, and good restaurants in the city were usually booked weeks in advance.

I called several top–tier restaurants as I walked back to my car, explaining that I was hoping for a last–minute table for three. Most of them laughed–politely, but still.

“Le Bernardin? I’m sorry, we’re completely booked until next month.”

“Daniel? Our next availability is three weeks from Tuesday.”

“The Modern? Let me check… no, nothing tonight.”

I was starting to lose hope when I tried one more place–a well–regarded steakhouse in Midtown that the boys would probably love.

“Smith & Wollensky,” the hostess answered.

“Hi, I know this is incredibly last–minute, but do you have any availability tonight for a party of three? Around six–thirty or seven?”

There was a pause, and I could hear the clicking of computer keys.

“Actually,” the hostess said, sounding surprised, “we just had a cancellation for a seven o’clock table. Party of four, but we can accommodate three. Would that work?”

“Yes!” I said, probably a little too enthusiastically. “That would be perfect. Thank you so much.”

“Great. Can I get a name for the reservation?”

“Williams. Mia Williams.”

“Perfect, Ms. Williams. We’ll see you at seven.”

I was thrilled. Finally, a bit of good luck.

Alexander and Ethan deserved a celebration dinner. They’d been through so much stress recently.

Plus, I’ll admit it, I was feeling pretty damn good about landing such a lucrative client. Maxwell’s project was going to establish my firm as a serious player in the luxury renovation market. This was the kind of success I’d been working toward for years.

I drove home with the radio turned up, singing along to whatever pop song was playing, feeling more optimistic

God, I loved those boys.

As I pulled into my apartment complex’s parking garage, I was already mentally planning the evening. The boys would need baths, definitely. Alexander always managed to acquire mysterious stains on his clothes between breakfast and pickup time, and Ethan’s hair would need to be wrestled into submission.

My phone rang just as I was getting out of the car. Thomas.

“Hey,” I answered, balancing my portfolio case and purse as I headed toward the elevator.

“Hey yourself. How did the Maxwell meeting go?”

“Really well, actually. The project is ahead of schedule, and I just got the first payment. It’s…” I paused, grinning. “It’s really good, Thomas. Like, really good.”

“That’s fantastic, Mia. I’m so proud of you.”

“Thanks. Listen, I want to take the boys somewhere special tonight to celebrate. Smith & Wollensky at seven. Want to join us?”

“I’d love to, but I’m stuck in meetings until at least eight. Rain check?”

“Of course. Though you might want to brace yourself–the boys are going to want to tell you every single detail of their fancy dinner experience.”

Thomas laughed. “I’m looking forward to it. Have fun tonight. You deserve this.”

“We all do,” I said, stepping into the elevator.

The boys were going to be so excited about dinner tonight. I could already picture their faces when I told them we were going to a real grown–up restaurant where they could order steak and wear their nice clothes.

I unlocked my apartment door, already calling out, “Boys! Mama’s home, and do I have a surprise for you!”

Alexander and Ethan came running from the living room, still in their preschool clothes, their faces lighting up with curiosity and excitement.

“What kind of surprise?” Alexander asked, bouncing on his toes.

“Are we going somewhere special?” Ethan added, hi

eyes wide with anticipation.

“We are indeed going somewhere very special,” I confirmed, setting down my bags and opening my arms for hugs. “But first, you two need baths and we need to pick out your most handsome outfits.”

“Where are we going?” they asked in unison.

“To a fancy restaurant where they serve the best steak in the city,” I announced.

The squeals of excitement that followed were loud enough to wake the neighbors, but I didn’t care. This was what happiness sounded like in our house.

This was what success felt like.
