The Unwanted Wife and Her Secret Twins Chapter 236

    Those boys hit mel

    Mia’s Poy

“What’s wrong?” 1 asked, immediately going into crisis mode.

“There’s kids playing tag in the garden!” Ethan announced breathlessly. “Can we play too? Please?”

    I

ked around and spotted several other children around their age racing through the French doors that led to

the terrace. Get full chapters from Find1Novel.net

“As long as you stay where I can see you,” I said. “And no climbing on anything! And if you get dirty, you’ll have to sit quietly for the rest of the night.”

“We promise!” they chorused, already turning to race back toward the doors.

“Be careful!” I called after them, then turned back to Thomas with an apologetic smile. “Sorry. Parental override.”

“I love watching you with them,” he said softly, pulling me close again. “You’re such a good mother, Mia.”

    “I try,”

“I replied, though I wasn’t always sure I was doing it right. Single parenting was exhausting, even with all the help I had.

“You don’t just try,” Thomas insisted. “You succeed. Every day.”

    His words warmed me.

“Thomas,” I began, not sure what I wanted to say.

But before I could figure it out, a commotion near the terrace doors caught my attention. Raised voices, including one that was definitely Alexander’s.

“Excuse me,” I said, immediately heading toward the disturbance.

We made it through the French doors just as a little girl, maybe six years old, burst into loud, dramatic sobs.

“They hit me!” she wailed, pointing accusingly at my twins. “Those boys hit me!!

My heart sank. Alexander and Ethan stood nearby looking confused and upset, Alexander’s face flushed with indignation.

“We did not!” Alexander protested. “We were just playing tag!”

“You pushed me!” the little girl continued crying, her voice getting louder and more dramatic by the second.

Other parents had started to gather, creating a small crowd around the scene. I could feel their eyes on us, judging, speculating.

“What happened?” I asked, crouching down to the twins‘ level. “Tell me exactly what happened.”

“We were playing tag with the other kids,” Ethan explained, his voice small and worried. “And she was ‘it‘ so she was trying to tag us. But when Alexander ran away, she fell down.”

“I didn’t push her!” Alexander added desperately. “She just fell down by herself!”

I looked at the little girl, who was still sobbing dramatically. Her dress was clean, with no dirt or grass stains. Her hair was still perfectly arranged. If she’d actually fallen hard enough to warrant this level of crying, there would be some evidence.

“Sweetheart,” I said gently to the girl, “are you hurt? Do you need me to look at where it hurts?”

She sniffled and shook her head, but continued crying.

    “Excuse me.”

The voice was cold, authoritative, and unmistakably hostile. I looked up to see a woman approaching our little group, and my breath caught.

She was beautiful in the way that only serious money could achieve.Even through she looked to be around my

    age.

And she was looking at me like I was something unpleasant she’d found on the bottom of her designer shoe. “Is there a problem here?” she asked, though her tone suggested she already knew exactly what the problem was and who was to blame for it.

“Your daughter is upset,” I said carefully, standing up. “The children were playing tag and she fell down. My boys say they didn’t push her.”

The woman’s perfectly sculpted eyebrows rose. “Are you calling my daughter a liar?”

The temperature in the air seemed to drop several degrees. I could feel Thomas moving closer behind me, could sense the other parents shifting uncomfortably.

“Not at all,” I said evenly. “I’m just trying to understand what happened. Children sometimes remember things differently when they’re upset.”

“Madison doesn’t lie,” the woman said flatly, reaching down to scoop up her still–sniffling daughter. “Do you, sweetheart? Tell Mommy what happened.”

Madison buried her face in her mother’s shoulder, but I could hear her muffled words: “The mean boys pushed me and laughed!”

I felt Alexander tense beside me, and I put my hand on his shoulder to keep him from exploding into angry

    protests.

    “Mrs…?” I began, realizing I didn’t know this woman’s name.

“Whitmore,” she supplied coldly. “Victoria Whitmore. And you are?”

“Mia Williams,” I replied, extending my hand in what I hoped was a peaceful gesture.

    She ignored it completely.

“Williams,” she repeated, as if tasting something unpleasant. “Interesting.”

    Those boys hit me!

There was something in the way she said my name that made my skin crawl. Like she knew something I didn’t. Like this whole encounter wasn’t the random playground accident it appeared to be.

“I think there’s been a misunderstanding,” I said, stepping forward. “Children play rough sometimes, but I’m sure no one meant any harm.”

The way she looked like she was filing away information for later use made me feel uncomfortable.

“Well,” she said finally, adjusting her grip on Madison,. “I suppose these things happen when children aren’t properly supervised.”

The insult was delivered with such casual venom that it took me a moment to process it. When I did, my own temper flared.

“My children are perfectly well–supervised,” I said, my voice sharp enough to cut glass. “And they don’t make at habit of pushing other children.”

“Of course not,” Victoria replied with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “I’m sure you do your best.”

The dismissal in her tone was unmistakable. Like I was some kind of incompetent single mother who couldn’t control her own children.

“Come along, Madison,” she continued. “Let’s find you some better playmates.”

As she turned to leave, Madison peeked over her mother’s shoulder and stuck her tongue out at Alexander and Ethan. The little brat had been performing the whole time.

But it was Victoria Whitmore’s parting look that chilled me to the bone. Pure, undiluted hostility, like she knew exactly who I was and had been waiting for this moment.

Like this entire encounter had been planned.

    What the hell?

Alexander tugged at my dress, his face still flushed with righteous indignation. “Mama, we really didn’t push. her. She’s lying.”

“I know, sweetie,” I said, crouching down to hug both twins. “I believe you.”
