    Chapter 201 Come to Light

    Mia’s POV

Through my tears, I recognized the man–It was Nate.

Thadn’t seen him in so long, and he seemed different from the Nate I remembered. Seemed thiner, taller. His usually compassionate features were hardened.

My heart surged with relief and confusion. Had he come to save me?

“Uncle Charles, don’t kill her,” Nate said, his voice steady but urgent.

Uncle Charles? I blinked in confusion, my mind struggling to process this new information as it tried to fit the pieces together.

The man named Charles turned to face me, sizing me up through the rim of his glass. “Wasn’t that your decision? You lost Carol, and now you want Alexander Branson and Kyle Branson to lose their wives too. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”

My head was about to explode. The fragments suddenly aligned, and I finally understood the truth.

    Diana’s daughter was Carol.

    Carol was Nate’s wife.

Nate’s expression was filled with sorrow. He looked at me, then back at Charles, his posture tense with indecision.

Charles wore a mocking smile. “Don’t tell me you fell in love with Kyle’s ex–wife, Nate. It seems Diana’s diary was also sent by you.”

Nate’s face remained pained. He only said, “Mia is my friend, Uncle Charles.”

Charles laughed. “Have you forgotten why you came to New York, Nate Pierce?”

The twins kicked sharply inside me, as if sensing my distress. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself for their sake, though fear still coursed through my veins.

Charles lowered the gun slightly, but kept it pointed in my general direction. I watched them both, trying to understand the dynamics between them, searching for any opening that might help me escape.

“Nate, the first time we met, you

said you knew me. It turns out you wanted to kill me.” I spoke quietly, surprised by the steadiness of my own voice.

Nate didn’t say a word, but his eyes met mine, filled with a complexity of emotions I couldn’t fully interpret.

Charles spoke slowly, breaking the tense silence. “It seems we have a bit of time. Before Ms. Williams dies, perhaps she deserves to know the full story.”

He wasn’t in a hurry. Before I died, he might as well tell me everything. The thought chilled me to the bone, but I forced myself to focus. Information might be my only chance at survival.

    Come to Light

Charles returned to his chair, placing the glass back in its original spot with precise movements. He gestured for Nate to sit as well, but Nate remained standing, his body angled slightly toward me–protective, I realized with a jolt.

“Diana was my sister,” Charles began, his voice taking on an almost reverential quality. “To be precise, she was my sister by adoption. I loved her. But my parents wouldn’t allow us to be together. However, I knew that once i had enough influence in the family business, my parents wouldn’t stand in my way.”

    I flinched at the implication.

“She was very intelligent, and she was beautiful. She was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen,” he continued, his gaze fixed on some distant point. “She graduated from Stanford with honors, and we were going to take over the Porter Empire together. It was almost within our grasp. I was about to publicly declare my feelings for her.”

Charles patiently recounted the story, and strangely, my fear seemed to fade as I listened, replaced by a bizarre clarity.

His expression darkened. “Then she met Alexander Branson.”

I recalled the entries in Diana’s diary. She had discovered Alexander’s corrupt business practices, threatened to expose him, and he had killed her for it. At least, that was what I had believed until now.

But what Charles said next sent a chill down my spine.

“Alexander seduced her,” Charles spat the words, disgust evident in his tone. “Used her. Then, when she discovered the truth about his business dealings–the money laundering, the environmental violations, the bribes he tried to silence her. He sent assassins to the lake house.”

He paused, his fingers tightening around the glass until I feared it might shatter. “But they made a mistake. Diana had already fled to Europe. She had contacts there, places to hide. What they didn’t know–what nobody knew except for Diana and me–was that she had a twin sister.”

“Thea,” I whispered, remembering the photograph at Yiayia’s restaurant.

Charles’s eyes snapped to me, narrowing in surprise. “You know about Thea?”

“I met Yayia, Thea’s mother today,” I said simply. “She showed me a photograph.”

    Nate’s expression shifted slightly.

Charles nodded slowly. “Yes, Thea. Separated at birth from Diana, adopted by a Greek family.”

He took another sip of his drink. “Diana was right to be cautious. When she fled to Europe, she didn’t realize that Alexander’s men would continue looking. They found Thea instead–at her country house, similar location to Diana’s lake house. Similar appearance. An easy mistake to make.”

“They killed the wrong sister,” I said, the horror of it washing

“Yes.” Charles’s voice turned bitter. “Thea died in Diana’s place. Left two young sons without a mother. When Diana found out, it destroyed her. She blamed herself for her sister’s death.”

“And Carol?” I asked, my gaze shifting to Nate, whose pain was now palpable.

“Carol was Diana’s daughter,” Charles sald.

    The truth was heavy.

“Carol grew up without knowing her true heritage,” Nate spoke for the first time since the story began. “She was raised by Diana’s trusted friend in Europe, away from the Porter name and Influence. Away from the danger.

Nate’s eyes met mine, filled with a sorrow so deep it seemed bottomless. “I met Carol at a medical conference in Paris. We fell in love. Married. It was only after-” his voice caught, “-only after we were married that we discovered the truth.”

    “The truth?” I prompted gently.

“That our mothers were twin sisters,” he said. “That made us cousins. The revelation was difficult enough, but when Carol learned the full story. It was too much.”

“The sensitive and kind Carol couldn’t bear it,” Charles interjected, his voice cold with barely controlled rage. She took her own life rather than live with the knowledge of what had been done to her family.”

Nate’s face crumpled at these words, the grief still raw after five years. “I found her. In the bathtub. The water was red…” He trailed off, unable to continue.

I felt tears spring to my eyes, understanding now the depth of Nate’s pain.

“That was when I decided,” Charles continued, “that Alexander Branson and his bloodline needed to pay. An eye for an eye. A life for a life. Alexander himself was beyond my reach–already dead. But his son remained. Kyle Branson, who benefited from his father’s corrupt empire, who continued the legacy built on blood money.”

“Uncle Charles,” Nate pleaded, stepping closer to me. “I always thought it was hatred that kept me alive after Carol died. But no, it was my love for her that kept me going. Mia shouldn’t have to die like this, just like Carol, Diana, and Thea shouldn’t have died.”

“You’ve grown soft, Nate,” Charles sneered. “Remember how you felt when you found Carol? Remember your vow? You came to New York for one purpose to destroy Kyle Branson as thoroughly as Alexander destroyed our family.

“Yes,” Nate admitted, his gaze meeting mine. “That was why I first took an interest in your mother’s case, Mia. “To get close to you. To find a way to hurt Kyle through you. But

I finally understood why Nate left New York so suddenly, why he kept warning me to leave.”

Nate nodded, a pained expression crossing his face. “Mia, I am sorry. You reminded me of Carol sometimes. I couldn’t be the instrument of more suffering.”

“How touching,” Charles said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. He raised the gun again, pointing it directly at my chest. “Fortunately, I’m not burdened by such sentimentality. The Branson bloodline ends today.”

“Time is up,” Charles said, his finger tightening on the trigger.

    Come to light

Nate lunged forward, but he was too far away to reach Charles in time. I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for impact, curling my body as much as possible around my unborn sons in a futile attempt to protect them.

Gunshots rang out, the sound deafening in the confined space.

But the pain I expected didn’t come.

I opened my eyes to see Charles staggering backward, a bloom of red spreading across his immaculate white shirt. His expression was one of shock as lie looked down at the wounds, then up at the doorway.

Kyle stood there, gun still raised, his face a mask of cold fury unlike anything I’d ever seen before.

    “Kyle,” I gasped.

Charles recovered quickly despite his injuries, raising his own weapon toward Kyle. Both men now stood with guns pointed at each other, creating a tableau of deadly tension.

“Branson,” Charles snarled, blood beginning to seep from the corner of his mouth. “How fitting that you be here to witness this.

“Drop the gun, Porter,” Kyle commanded, his voice terrifyingly calm. “It’s over.”
