    Shifted Fate Chapter 644

I stumbled as I burst back through the ground, my eyes flying open as I gasped for air. My father frowned at my reaction—I could tell he wanted to ask what happened—but I couldn’t stop. I waved him off, took a cleansing breath, and moved straight into the next part.

Pontus. I needed to connect to him.

I focused on the water running beneath my feet, hidden deep within the earth. I closed my eyes and pictured the crash of waves beyond the cabin, the mist that always kissed my face when I stood at the edge, the vast sea stretching endlessly below. The hidden veins of the world, untouched by man.

    “Nei tok lo sin kipa.”

I stretched my arms wide, flinging my power outward like scattered droplets. It sank through the ground, and I felt the water respond. It bubbled up to meet me, flowing around my ankles, my knees, rising higher. I envisioned a shield spreading across the pack lands—impenetrable, allowing us to move freely while repelling humans.

“Tosh hi fic nedit kan ya.”

Water surged over my head, my chest tightening. I swam instinctively, searching for a way out, desperate for air—but the current pulled me along, dragging me toward the open sea.

Cool water rushed around me, dark and fast, like a massive water slide. I laughed as it carried me, swept up in the thrill of it—until I saw a shape forming in the distance. I dove, swimming away from the god pursuing me. I felt his massive form cut through the water. I twisted, rolling my body beneath his.

He turned and swam back toward me, clearly startled by the chase. Pontus’s deep laughter echoed through the water. His serpent form circled me until he offered a fin, and I grabbed it.

Take it, he said, laughter filling his voice. I need to show you something.

    Then we were moving.

He dove deeper. The fresh water around us turned salty, pressure building as we descended. Still, I held my breath. My lungs burned, panic clawing at me as I feared I might pass out.

Breathe, godling. My domain will not harm you. His voice was bright, eager. It has been so long since I could play like this. Come—see my center.

I hesitated, then tried to breathe. Water rushed into my lungs, and panic flared—until the need for air vanished. I took another breath of water and felt it feed oxygen directly into my body.

“I’m not dead,” I said, startled.

He laughed and surged faster. Darkness swallowed us the deeper we went. Then—

    Look.

Light flared to life. I gasped.

We were in a trench so deep it felt like the end of the world. Creatures I’d never imagined swam around us. At the very bottom, a pulsing heart of coral glowed pure white—beautiful and alive. I reached out, fingers brushing the nearest branch.

Pontus shuddered. Focus on your packs, godling, before your touch distracts me enough to make me fight your mate for you.

My mouth fell open, but I shook myself and closed my eyes.

“Pontus, father of the sea, hear my call. Allow my power to flow through you to shield and shelter the packs I must protect from those who would harm them.”

I felt my power ripple outward, racing through the water. My fingers slipped from the coral as Pontus spun me, flinging me into a powerful current that carried me back.

I shot through the water and burst onto land, slamming into the ground. I caught myself on my hands, panting as I dragged in air. My clothes were soaked. I lifted my head to see my father dropping to his knees in front of me. Our eyes met. I nodded and gave him a shaky thumbs-up, taking another moment to steady myself.

I pushed back to my feet. Power still surged through me. I pulled the last of it from the ground—the blood that had once coated every blade of grass was gone, drawn completely into the spell.

I turned in a slow circle and caught the moment guards burst through the trees. They ran straight for my father, likely bringing word that the convoy was nearly here. Cass was among them, sprinting toward us.

Focus on the spell. Call my brother. Pontus’s voice held a note of amusement. You don’t have time to recover. The humans are almost here.
