    Shifted Fate Chapter 638

I braced myself as my parents rushed toward me. My father reached me first, his battered body once again healed and fully clothed. “If you ever do that again, I swear to the Goddess Amy Maclean, I’ll kill you myself.” His grip was tight—almost suffocating—before I was pulled from his arms.

My mother’s hands hovered over every inch of me, checking to make sure I was whole. Her right hand was healed, though her fingers were still missing past the first knuckle. I took her hand and examined it. “Will they grow back?” I asked, looking up at her face. She only shrugged.

“I’ve never lost a finger before, so I don’t know.” She pulled her hand away and pointed at me. “What the hell were you thinking?”

“What spell was that?” my dad asked, shaking his head. “I’ve never seen lightning like that before.”

I shook my head. “It wasn’t a spell. Not that I know of… it just kind of happened.” I let out a breath and felt another tug in my chest. “What happened after the lightning?” I looked around at everyone. “I don’t remember anything.”

My dad snorted. “How would you?” He waved a hand through the air. “You pulled lightning straight down. It hit everyone in the clearing.”

I frowned. “How did you all survive?”

He tapped his forehead. “Anyone with a moon—the lightning ran through us, like we were grounded, then moved on.”

Cass nodded. “I was watching from the window. It was freaking insane.” She grinned. “You have to tell me how you did it.” She tugged on my hand, and I laughed.

“If I knew, I would. I’m just as lost as you are.” I turned back to my dad. “So the lightning killed the rest?”

He shook his head. “It dropped everyone, but the moons protected us and we got back up. The ones without moons were still alive, but badly fried. We went through and finished them off.” He wiped his face. “You scared us, Bug.”

“How long was I out?” I asked, turning to Rowan.

“A day.” He pulled me into his arms. “Just a day.”

“We just finished sorting through everything,” my dad added with a sigh.

“The doctor mentioned that,” I said slowly. “Sorting…” I looked around, confused. “What were you sorting?”

Cass turned green. “Bodies.” She gagged. “They were sorting bodies.”

My dad kicked at the dark ground. “We pulled all the moon-marked wolves aside for burial and started a fire at the far end of the field.” He pointed toward the Dead Caves. A small fire burned where wolves were feeding it, beside a massive pile of something I didn’t want to look at too closely.

“I’m hoping for rain before tomorrow night,” my mom said, glancing up at the cloud-covered sky.

“Why?” I asked, sniffing the air to see if I could smell rain coming.

“She wants the blood washed away before the ceremony tomorrow night,” my dad said, pulling her into his arms. “But I’ve already explained that it’s set up in the backyard, so the front yard won’t matter.”

I looked up at Rowan. “What ceremony?”

His ears turned pink, and Cass giggled. “It’s, um… your mom’s idea, really.”

Cass burst out laughing. “Your mom wants to perform a waning moon ceremony—to release the spirits of the lost and move into the next phase of life. And she thought it would be the perfect night for your mating ceremony.”

I spun to stare at her, and she grinned. “Lycans mate under different phases of the moon, and a waning gibbous is a good time to let go of the past.” She raised an eyebrow at me. “Moving into a new phase after the last few days seems like a great idea, don’t you think?” She studied my face.

“I have nothing prepared,” I murmured, staring at the ground as the tug in my chest returned.

She jumped up and clapped. “I’ve got everything planned. Don’t worry about a thing.”

I opened my mouth to respond, but my father’s phone rang. He pulled it from his pocket and answered. “Hey.” He staggered, then pulled the phone away and hit speaker.

“Yeah, I don’t know what to tell you, Gav. I saw them with my own eyes. You’re the only one left up on that mountain.” The voice sounded familiar.

I mouthed Who is that? to my dad, but he waved me off. “Are you sure?”

“Yes, Gav, I am. I’ve watched human war movies. You’ve got a full-on convoy headed your way. One truck has a machine gun mounted on it.” The words landed like a slap. The tug in my chest yanked harder. “You’ve got about thirty minutes before they reach your lands.”

“Okay. Thanks.” My dad hung up, and I felt power bubble up from my soul again. “What do we do?” His face went pale. Humans were coming to kill us—or worse—and we had nowhere to go. The caves were gone.

“Get me a map,” I said, my thoughts spinning.

“A map? Of what?” My dad stepped toward the house.

“I need a map of every pack on this continent.” He ran inside as my chest pounded.

    Power surged through me.

“Why?” Rowan asked, turning me to face him.

My voice was low but certain. “Do you really think our pack is the only one the council sold out to the humans?”
