Shifted Fate Chapter 637
The room was silent except for the ticking of the lock. I felt a tug in my chest, pulling me toward the pack house. The first pull had been gentle, but this one made me gasp. I needed to get down there—soon.
Then a timer went off, making both of us jump. “What do you mean I called down lightning?” My mind couldn’t wrap around that detail.
He turned back to the cart and shook his head. “Like I said, the story has turned more into a myth at this point. Everyone has been—” He stopped mid-sentence, his hand hovering over the strip. I heard him swallow.
“What’s wrong?” I stepped up beside him.
He held out a tiny strip of paper with two pink lines. I froze.
“Congratulations, Luna.” He coughed as he set the strip back on the cart and bowed. “You’re pregnant.”
My hand flew to my stomach as tears burned my eyes. “Truly?”
He nodded. “This is the second test. The first was when you were out cold, and I wanted to be sure before getting your hopes up.” He smiled. “But I’m certain.”
A new fear bubbled up inside me. “Tell no one.”
He studied me for a few seconds, then nodded. “Of course.” He bowed again.
I needed to tell Rowan myself, but that tug returned, insistent. “So you said lightning.” I pushed the pup to the back of my mind; we would have plenty of time to talk about our son.
He nodded. “Like I said, I wasn’t there to see it, but everyone I’ve treated who was there hasn’t stopped talking about it.”
I nodded once, stunned. Then another thought hit me. “What ceremony?”
The doctor smiled. “That, I’ll leave for your mother to explain.” He grabbed the cart and headed for the door. I said my goodbyes and finally followed the pull in my chest.
The moment I stepped out of the pack hospital, wolves swarmed me. “Thank you, Queen Luna.” They bowed, some even dropping to the ground.
“Please—stand.” I hurried to the nearest wolf and helped her to her feet. “Please don’t bow.” I brushed off her clothes. “I don’t want it, and I don’t need it.”
“You saved my son and my husband.” She shook her head, tears filling her eyes.
“And I’m sure they saved many others, too.” I wiped away a tear of my own. “We work together. We support each other.” I smiled as I stepped back. “That’s what it means to be a wolf.”
She nodded once, but still bowed again. Her voice echoed through the mind-link. “I, Sese Lin, thank Queen Luna Amy for saving my family.” The message carried through the pack link.
A howl sounded from behind the pack house, followed by pounding feet. I had less than a minute to get where I needed to be before I was tackled—or worse. I took off running.
“You can run, rabbit, but it won’t save you.” Rowan’s voice was thick with something I couldn’t quite place.
I laughed as I sprinted to the front of the pack house and slid to a stop at the steps just as my mate caught me. He pulled me into his arms and breathed in my scent. “You are not allowed to do that again,” he murmured into my hair.
“You, my love, are not my boss.”
He chuckled and spun me around to face him. “I am your king. Which makes me the biggest boss you’ll ever have.” He pulled me back against his chest and held me there. “You terrified me.” His voice was heavy with worry—and love. “I thought I lost you.”
I shook my head against him. “You can’t get rid of me that easily.” I smiled and pushed back just enough to kiss him. “I’m sorry.”
His eyes glimmered, but he smiled. “I’m just happy you’re alive.”
A choking sound made him step back, and I barely had time to brace myself before Cass launched herself into my arms.
“You bitch.” She was crying, but for the first time since she lost her pup, I saw a spark of my best friend again. “You are not allowed to die on me, remember? We’re supposed to grow old together.” She hit my chest, then laughed.
“I’m sorry.” I cupped her cheek and nuzzled her. When I pulled back, her scent stopped me. “Are you okay?” She still smelled of her pup. “Your scent has changed.”
She smiled faintly. “No, I’m not okay.” She shook her head, and my stomach dropped. “But I am getting better.” She wiped her face. “Greyson noticed it too. The doctor said it can take a while for my body to return to its original scent.” She shrugged. “You’re okay, though?” She looked me over, and I nodded.
“I am.” I smiled as I turned—and the smile froze on my face.
“You are dead!”
