I pushed past the barrier, and the second I did, I felt my soul snap back into place with Nix’s—just in time to watch her crush another wolf’s skull. Something thick and chunky hit the back of my throat, and I jerked back, spitting it out before I could think. I refused to look down as I gagged. Nix snickered, which only made me gag again.

“You did that on purpose,” I choked out.

Nix shook her head. No—but I didn’t expect you to come back so fast.

I took a moment before turning to the others. Toya and Roderick were crouched beside Femi, checking her over. “How long were we gone?”

Nix turned away from the family. Less than five minutes. Roderick and I handled the four wolves that approached. But the fighting near the pack house is getting worse—and our father called for us while you were out.

“Are we ready to go?” I called to the trio, and they all looked over.

Femi stood, took a few testing steps, then nodded. “Let’s go find our pup.”
Roderick nodded. I turned to Toya.

“Go with your parents,” I said, facing the pack house. “I have to fight my way there.”

Toya looked torn. “We should go together.”

I nudged her shoulder. “We can’t. You need to find Wendy and your brother. And I need to find Rowan and my parents.”

Toya stepped closer. “I can come with you.”

I pushed her gently toward her parents. “They need you more. If I find Wendy or anyone else, I’ll send a mind-link. But if you come with me, you’ll just worry about your parents the whole time.”

“Toya!”
A strangled cry snapped our heads around. A shaggy tan wolf barreled toward us, the moon marking on his forehead the only thing that kept him from getting attacked. I stepped back, assuming it was her brother, but the way he immediately licked her snout told me it was Sequan.

I tilted my head. “How did you know she was Toya? I can’t scent anyone.”

Toya and Sequan turned toward me. “We shifted together before the attack,” Toya said with a relieved laugh. “Thankfully.” She nuzzled her mate. “How else would I find him in all this chaos?”

A breath I hadn’t realized I was holding slipped out. “Good. Then the four of you work together. I have to go.” I turned to leave, but Toya screamed.

“Stop!” She leapt in front of me, blocking my path.

I stumbled to avoid crashing into her. “Toya, I have to help my parents.”

She exhaled shakily. “I know. And if you won’t let me go with you—take Sequan.”

I snorted. “If you’re going to worry about your parents, you’ll worry about Sequan too.”

She shook her head. “No, I won’t.” She glanced back at the trio. “He’s a Royal Guard—trained for battle. And you’ll be with him.” She stepped closer. “I know you’d do everything in your power to keep him alive.”

“Toya… I’m headed into the center.”
Smoke drifted up from somewhere near the house, and the vicious growls, the howls of pain, and the snarling tangle of wolves tearing into each other told me exactly how brutal the path ahead would be. “You’re saying you’re okay with your mate heading into that mess, with only me watching his back, while you search for your brother?”

She met my eyes. “Yes. I am. Because you are my Queen, and I trust you with my life. So why wouldn’t I trust you with his?”

Warmth bloomed in my chest.

“You trust me that much?” I asked, breathless.

She nodded. “If I can’t be with you, then I trust Sequan to watch your back.” She turned to him. “Don’t let her die.”

He chuckled. “I’ll protect her with my life.” He licked her face once more. “Find us when you can.”

Toya nodded, then returned to her parents. “Let’s go.”
The trio sprinted toward the edge of the field, circling in to check on the others.

I turned to Sequan. “Are you okay with this?”

He chuckled. “Yes, my Queen. You trained her. She’s with her parents, and she’s moving away from the main fight.” He bumped my shoulder lightly. “Let’s go find your parents.”

We started running, but a thought hit me, and I veered slightly left.

“Before we head in, we’re checking one area first.”

“Why?” he asked. A good question. Blind obedience never sat right with me.

“Because Rowan was this way when I checked from above. I want to grab him before we push toward the main house.” I sent up a silent prayer. Please keep him safe.

Megan burst out of the trees. He’s still there. Erebus is expecting you.

Nix poured more power into our legs, and Sequan panted beside us, struggling to keep pace.

“Holy shit, you’re fast,” he grunted as we vaulted over body after body. I laughed as we ran—until my blood went cold.

A knot of wolves tore into each other ahead of us.

Rowan was in the center.

Barely holding on.
