Chapter 2438
“The marriage between our two families is not just my adoptive father’s wish—it represents the intent of the entire Mosey family,” Frost Bane said with a smile, addressing the Duke of Lachshire.
Simon responded calmly, “According to royal tradition, direct descendants of the royal family cannot marry each other. Have you forgotten?”
Frost Bane shook his head, smiling faintly. “Clinging to old traditions hinders progress. Dragonmarsh is in turmoil—internal strife, external threats, and whispers of the emperor’s failing health. I’ve heard he’s considering appointing a crown prince and abdicating early. When that happens, chaos will likely engulf Oakvale.
The four royal families, the eight prominent clans, and all other factions will inevitably be drawn into this storm. That’s why I propose an alliance between the Mosey and Ballard families through marriage, so we can face these challenges together.”
Simon remained composed. “It’s normal for the emperor to name a crown prince. Why assume it will cause turmoil? As ministers, our duty is to serve loyally, not overstep our roles.”
Waylon, who had been silently observing, frowned and interjected, “Duke of Lachshire, that’s naive. In every dynasty, disputes over the crown prince have brought bloodshed and chaos. You’ve served in court for years—don’t tell me you’re unaware of this. Or are you just pretending to be oblivious?”
Simon, unfazed, replied, “Master Mosey, let me be frank. The Ballard family is small compared to other powers. We have no interest in getting involved in the throne’s succession. We’ve always remained neutral, and that will not change.”
Simon understood the Mosey family’s ambitions. By forming alliances through marriage, they could consolidate power and support a particular prince’s claim to the throne. Once that prince ascended, the Mosey family’s influence would soar.
Frost Bane’s demeanor turned serious. “Duke of Lachshire, forgive my bluntness, but the Ballard family’s status makes neutrality impossible. If you were a minor household, no one would care. But as one of the four royal families, with your high rank and influence, staying uninvolved will only make you a target.
You have two choices:First, align yourself with a prince now. If he succeeds, your family will thrive for a century.Second, attempt to remain neutral, angering all sides, and risk losing everything—your power, your position, even your family.”
Frost Bane leaned closer, his voice steady. “No emperor tolerates an influential minister who refuses to fall in line.”
Simon fell silent. He knew Frost Bane was right.
The Ballard family’s influence made them an asset all factions coveted. Neutrality would likely backfire, turning them into pawns or scapegoats. A wrong move could spell the end of their legacy.
Finally, Simon spoke. “This is a grave matter. I need time to consider before giving the Mosey family an answer.”
Frost Bane nodded, his smile returning. “Of course, Duke. But I urge you to decide quickly. Opportunities are fleeting, and the Mosey family has other options for alliances.”
Waylon added with a cold smile, “Don’t think you can stall to gain leverage. Time waits for no one.”
With that, Frost Bane rose, bowed politely, and left with his entourage.
As soon as the Mosey family departed, the Ballard brothers, Tobias, Jayceon, and Kairo, turned to their father.
“Dad, their arrogance is infuriating! Threatening us like that—it’s outrageous!” Tobias growled, his temper flaring.
Jayceon, the more pragmatic of the three, shook his head. “Their methods may be distasteful, but their arguments have merit. With the crown prince’s dispute brewing, staying neutral will be extremely difficult.”
Kairo looked to Simon. “What’s your decision, Father?”
Simon sighed heavily, rubbing his temples. “This situation is a headache. The survival of our family is at stake. A single misstep could destroy us.”
Jayceon offered a suggestion. “If we must act, why not support the prince most likely to succeed?”
Kairo analyzed the options. “The eldest prince, Tristan Linsor, is the legitimate heir. But he’s frail and unlikely to live long. The second prince, Matthias Linsor, is a military prodigy, respected by the soldiers, but lacks the skills to govern. The third prince, Nathaniel Linsor, is skilled in both civil and military affairs. However, his jealousy and lack of magnanimity make him an imperfect choice.”
Tobias frowned. “So who do we support?”
Kairo shrugged. “If I knew, this wouldn’t be such a dilemma.”
The room fell into a tense silence. The struggle for the throne loomed over them like a storm, and no one could predict its outcome.
