Married At First Sight Chapter 4539

Donovan ran out of the house as fast as he could.

When he saw River’s car parked out front, he panicked and fumbled with the lock, struggling for a while before finally opening the gate to the villa.

River rolled down the window and said calmly, “Romina’s asleep. It’s a long walk from here—it’ll be hard for you to carry her. I’ll have my driver pull the car inside.”

“Oh, okay… Romina’s asleep… Romina…”

Donovan trailed off mid-sentence as his eyes landed on River’s face and neck, which were completely covered in lipstick.

It was over. His sister had really crossed the line.

River looked like a cat had kissed him all over.

The driver pulled in and parked at the front door of the main house. River got out of the car, carried Romina in his arms, and walked straight into the house without waiting for Donovan to follow.

Since he didn’t know which bedroom was Romina’s, River didn’t bother going upstairs. He simply laid her down gently on the living room sofa.

Romina was sleeping like a log—completely unaware of her surroundings.

River didn’t leave right away.

When Donovan finally came in, River pointed at his face and said, “Mr. Lafond, take a good look at what your sister did to me. I was just trying to say goodbye to Mr. Lacroix, and she stopped me. She hugged me, touched me, kissed me.”

“She said things like, ‘Handsome, I love you so much. Come here, let me kiss you.’”

He gestured toward the lipstick-stained areas. “See this? She kissed me more than once.”

Donovan had never felt more embarrassed in his life.

“Mr. York, I… Romina was totally drunk. She has a habit—she likes handsome guys… She didn’t know what she was doing. I sincerely apologize on her behalf. I’m really sorry.”

River glanced at Romina, then said coolly, “Everyone’s responsible for their own actions. Romina crossed a line. She should be the one apologizing and taking responsibility. She’s asleep now, so there’s no point in arguing. I won’t press it tonight. But tomorrow—when she wakes up—I’ll be back to demand justice.”

With that, River pulled out his phone, turned on the camera, and recorded a short video of his lipstick-covered face.

“I’m saving this as evidence,” he told Donovan, “in case Romina denies it later.”

Donovan: “…”

All he could do was walk River out of the house with a forced smile, repeatedly apologizing and thanking him at the same time.

After seeing him off, Donovan went back inside and looked down at Romina, who was still passed out like a pig on the couch. He sighed bitterly.

“Romina, you’ve always held your liquor. Why’d you get drunk tonight of all nights? And if you had to flirt with someone, wasn’t Maddox handsome enough? Why not go after him?”

“But no, you just had to mess with River.”

“You’re really in for it now. River won’t let this go easily. Even if you jumped into the Yellow River, you couldn’t wash this off.”

Judging from River’s attitude, he was dead serious.

If Donovan had known this would happen, he would’ve insisted on going with her.

Donovan immediately called Maddox to get the full story.

Maddox explained that Romina had gotten upset after another clash with River and drank heavily out of frustration. Despite Maddox’s repeated attempts to stop her, she kept drinking. She’d counted on her high alcohol tolerance and ignored all warnings.

In the end, she got drunk and went straight for River…

Romina had dug a hole—and buried herself in it.

Once Donovan got the full picture, he sighed and carried his sister upstairs to her room.

If River really did show up tomorrow to demand “justice”… they’d deal with it then.

Still, River couldn’t seriously expect Romina to take responsibility for this… right?

Meanwhile, Romina remained sound asleep, blissfully unaware of the storm she’d stirred.

Romina didn’t wake until nearly noon the next day—her hunger finally dragging her out of sleep.

She’d drunk so much the night before but barely eaten a thing. That empty stomach might’ve been the reason she got so drunk. Now that she was well-rested, she wasn’t even hungover—just a little sore, but nothing she couldn’t handle.

Realizing she was still in last night’s evening dress, Romina made her way to the bathroom, took a hot shower, changed clothes, and slowly walked downstairs.

But even before she reached the bottom step, she noticed something strange.

Her parents, her brothers, and her grandfather were all sitting in the living room. No one was speaking. The whole house felt tense and quiet.

Why wasn’t anyone talking?

Then she spotted River—in her house. And not just him—Serenity was there too.

The living room was stacked with gift boxes, all decorated with bright red wedding symbols.

Wedding symbols?

Were they preparing for a wedding?

Which of her siblings was getting engaged?

As soon as they heard her footsteps, everyone looked up at once.

Romina, sensing the weird tension, made her way down under everyone’s gaze and walked over.

She glanced at River, did a double take, and burst into laughter.

“River, what happened to you last night? Your face and neck are covered in lipstick. Must’ve been a lucky night for you, huh?”

Everyone just stared at her in stunned silence.

At the same time, they cursed River silently.

He left those lipstick marks on purpose.

River hadn’t even bothered to wash his face after going home last night—he kept the “evidence” clear as day. He even brought along the suit she’d spilled wine on.

If he was going to complain, he was going all in.

Serenity had to fight back a laugh when she looked at Romina.

She hadn’t known about any of this until River came downstairs an hour ago and filled her in.

Then, he asked the butler to prepare an engagement gift set—complete with large red wedding stickers—and had Serenity accompany him to the Lafond house to “propose.”

River claimed Romina had taken advantage of him and should now take responsibility.

Of course, the so-called bride price he prepared in an hour was laughably light. It wasn’t a real proposal—he just wanted to mess with Romina.

And Serenity was more than happy to tag along and watch the drama unfold.

Since this was such a juicy scene, she left the kids at home with the nanny and canceled today’s plans.

After all, this kind of entertainment didn’t happen every day.

Romina looked around the room, uneasy under everyone’s stares.

“Why are you all looking at me like that?” she asked, finally unsettled.

She sat down next to Donovan and whispered, “Brother, what’s going on? Why are River and Sister Seren here? Why is everyone staring at me?”

She tried to think back. Did she cause some trouble last night?

Maybe it was because she splashed wine on River and kicked him?

Ugh, is he really that petty?

“Romina!”

Her grandfather finally broke the silence with a heavy sigh. “Don’t you remember anything you did to River last night?”

“Grandpa, I… Wait—Grandpa, you’re not seriously saying I’m the one who left all that lipstick on his face and neck, are you?” Romina asked, looking horrified.

She genuinely had no memory of what happened after she got drunk.

Everyone stared at Romina in silence.

Her voice trembled. “Grandpa, why won’t you say anything?”

Was it possible she really had done something to River?

But all she remembered was throwing a drink at him and kicking him. There was no way she kissed him, let alone enough to cover his face and neck with lipstick.

River finally spoke up. “Romina, you were drunk last night. Maddox was about to take you home, but when you left the Lacroix estate, you suddenly blocked my path. I was on my way to say goodbye to Mr. Lacroix. You stopped me, called me handsome, grabbed me, touched my face, threw yourself at me, and kissed me. I couldn’t even fight off your… claws.”

Romina’s face turned pale.

“What? That was me? No way! I wasn’t drunk—I can hold my liquor better than most men! Sure, I drank a lot last night, but I wasn’t drunk. River, stop making things up! You must’ve messed around somewhere else and now you’re blaming me. Don’t even try it!”

She turned to her family. “Grandpa, Mom, Dad—you have to believe me. I didn’t do those things! He’s just trying to get back at me for what I did last night. I spilled a drink on him—he’s just being petty, showing up now to humiliate me in front of all of you. He and I don’t even get along! Why would I ever throw myself at him? If you don’t believe me, we can check the security footage at the Lacroix estate. That’ll prove whether he’s lying.”

River chuckled. “Romina, your grandpa already watched the footage. He was at the Lacroix house earlier this morning. When I got here, your brother called him. He reviewed the cameras himself—everything I said checks out. That’s why he rushed back home, to confront you about it.

“Oh, and Maddox can confirm it too. You ditched him, blocked my way, and threw yourself at me right in front of him. He didn’t take you home—I did. I even called your brother to come open the door. He saw me, saw the lipstick all over me. He’s a witness.”

River paused, his tone turning pointed. “You called me your husband in public the other day and misled everyone into thinking we were together. Then last night you molested me, kissed me repeatedly, and tried to strip me. You kept saying you wanted to see my… well, let’s just say I had to hold onto my pants for dear life. You were so aggressive, I couldn’t fight you off. If you hadn’t passed out, I might not have gotten out of there in one piece.”

Romina was stunned.

No. It couldn’t be true.

She wasn’t drunk—she couldn’t have been. She had a high alcohol tolerance. She could drink like a fish and never lose control. Looking at the lipstick all over River, though, her stomach turned.

Did she really say she wanted to see his…? Oh god.

Her mother had told Maddox to keep an eye on her. She’d brushed it off, insisting she could handle her drinks.

Now this.

She looked up sharply at River. “You didn’t knock me out, did you? I don’t believe for a second that a grown man like you couldn’t stop a woman like me.”

Romina was still convinced River had done it on purpose.

River fired back, “You think you’re a weak woman? When you’re drunk, you’re a beast. If you don’t believe me, go call Maddox. He saw the whole thing—watched you come after me without lifting a finger.”

Romina had no response.

She turned to her family, searching their faces for some sign of support.

“Romina…” Donovan sighed. “River’s telling the truth. He brought you home last night, just like this. Maddox called me, I questioned him, and he confirmed it—you went after River.”

Romina squeezed her eyes shut.

She wanted to crawl under a rock and never come out.

Why did she have to drink so much last night? And if she had to get drunk, why couldn’t she have just let Maddox take her home? Why did she go after River?

Now, she was in so deep even the Yellow River couldn’t wash her clean.

Several minutes passed before she finally opened her eyes, stared at River, and asked, “What do you want?”

Serenity cleared her throat and stepped in. “Romina, River has always kept himself clean—no scandals, a good reputation. Last night, you crossed a line. Everyone knows. You ruined his name. So we came here today with a little gift, something we put together quickly. River says it’s a betrothal gift. You took advantage of him, so now he wants you to take responsibility.

“Don’t worry—this is just symbolic. If the marriage is agreed upon, I’ll call home and have our family send over a proper bride price. The York family won’t treat you unfairly. Whatever is owed to you, you’ll get—maybe even more than other daughters-in-law.”

Romina gasped. “Sister Seren! I was drunk—I wasn’t thinking straight. I can clarify things to the public, issue a public apology, and I’ll pay for any emotional damages. Whatever amount, as long as it’s reasonable, I’ll pay. But marry River? No way! We’re not even dating. There’s no love between us. How can you expect us to marry?”

Mrs. Lafond chimed in, “Miss Hunt, Mr. York, Romina was clearly in the wrong. We’re willing to apologize and offer compensation. But a marriage between two people with no feelings? That’s not right. A forced marriage won’t end well—it’ll only lead to resentment. That’s not good for anyone.”

Mr. Lafond nodded in agreement.

But Old Mr. Lafond remained silent, his eyes shifting between his granddaughter and River.

River was clearly being petty, but there was something more to this. Could it be that after years of bickering, River had actually fallen for Romina?

Then he looked back at Romina—clearly at a disadvantage now. She’d put herself in this situation.

They’d warned her repeatedly not to drink. She didn’t listen.

She knew River would be there at the party but still drank like she had something to prove.

Even someone with high tolerance could end up drunk.

So Old Mr. Lafond decided to hold back for now—he’d let the two young ones sort this out themselves.
