Married At First Sight Chapter 4487

Serenity smiled. “I think so too, Grandma. If it’s okay with you, I’ll secretly take a video of them interacting and show it to you. I’m in Eaglioncile now, and I’ll keep a close eye on Romina. I get the feeling River sees her as a sworn enemy, but he still says she has a good personality—so she must be pretty decent.”

“Great. Get more videos of them together for me—especially if they argue. That’s the most fun to watch,” the old lady said, amused.

She enjoyed watching couples who were like happy enemies.

Then she asked, “Have you called Zack yet?”

Serenity replied, “Not yet. I wanted to talk to you first, then I’ll give him a call. He’s at work and probably busy.”

The old lady chuckled. “Then call him quickly, or he’ll start pouting again. He used to be so generous, but ever since getting married and becoming a father, he’s turned stingy.”

He got jealous easily and even competed with his kids for Serenity’s attention.

Not even his beloved baby daughter could take his top spot in Serenity’s heart. Whenever she focused too much on the kids, Zachary would get jealous and act all sour—his bitterness could be tasted from miles away.

The old lady hung up first, telling Serenity to go call Zachary.

She knew her grandson well—she had raised him, after all.

And she was right. Zachary was sulking.

He was annoyed that Serenity had been in Eaglioncile all day and hadn’t called him. Sure, she messaged him after landing to say they’d arrived safely—but that was it.

She hadn’t called once since.

To Zachary, it felt like Serenity had taken the kids and left him behind, like she loved them more than him.

People often say that when a woman becomes a mother, her world revolves around her children, and it’s easy for her to forget about her husband.

Zachary worked so hard to make sure that didn’t happen. He thought he had done a great job. But the moment Serenity left, it was clear—her heart belonged to their kids.

He sighed. Maybe they should’ve waited a couple of years and enjoyed married life before having children.

But then he remembered how much pressure Serenity had been under when they were struggling to conceive. The guilt made him take back what he’d just thought.

Yes, a romantic two-person world would’ve been nice—but not at the cost of her happiness or peace of mind.

At that moment, Zachary was in a meeting, clearly distracted. Sitting beside him were Callum and Josh, who exchanged glances.

They didn’t have to ask what was wrong—they already knew.

Zachary’s emotional anchor was away on a trip, and he was feeling it.

The president’s wife hadn’t called.

Josh couldn’t help but think, Can’t he just call her himself?

Zachary could be so stubborn. He clearly wanted to talk to his wife, yet insisted on waiting for her to call him first.

She was probably too busy traveling with the kids to remember.

“Bro,” Callum whispered.

He had to call him two or three times before Zachary snapped out of his thoughts. When he looked at Callum, his icy glare made Callum instantly regret calling him.

Callum had just wanted to snap him out of his daze. Someone had finished presenting a project plan, and Zachary hadn’t said a word. The guy was so nervous, he was sweating bullets.

Zachary quickly realized what was going on and motioned for the presenter to return to his seat. Though he’d been zoning out, he had reviewed the plan before and remembered it well.

He approved it.

Zachary nodded. “It’s fine.”

The man let out a quiet sigh of relief, wiping sweat from his forehead.

Callum also felt a wave of relief. He had no idea what had gotten into Zachary this afternoon—he was definitely off his game.

Usually, Zachary would make everyone silence or turn off their phones during meetings—and he’d never check his own.

But today, he had his phone out on the table, not even muted. He kept glancing at it like he was waiting for someone to call.

No one dared to ask what was going on.

They could only guess.

And they were right.

“Ring, ring, ring…”

Zachary’s phone finally rang. He instantly picked it up, and when he saw Serenity’s name on the screen, the gloom vanished from his face. A genuine smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.

Everyone: … We were right.

It had to be his wife.

Only Serenity had the power to distract Zachary like this.

Did they have a fight or something?

Maybe he was waiting for her to apologize?

But no one wanted to be around them if Zachary and Serenity ever fought—he made everyone else suffer whenever he was in a bad mood.

“Callum, you take over the meeting. I’m stepping out to answer this,” Zachary said.

Ignoring everyone’s curious expressions, he walked out with his phone in hand.

His urgency only confirmed it—it had to be Serenity.

As soon as he stepped out, he answered.

“Wife,” he said, his voice deliberately soft and pitiful. “Do you still remember you have a husband? I thought you went off to have fun and forgot all about me.”

Hearing the mock hurt in his voice, Serenity burst out laughing.

Zachary returned to his office, flopped down on the sofa, and said, “Wife, you’re still laughing. God, I missed you so much. You only sent one message when you landed, and nothing since. I’ve been waiting all this time, and you’re laughing at me?”

Serenity chuckled and gently coaxed him, “Alright, alright, I won’t laugh at you anymore. My bad. I should’ve called earlier. I thought you were at work and didn’t want to bother you. Then I ran into River, and he took us to try some local snacks. After that, we bumped into his arch-enemy. The two of them started bickering, and I got so caught up watching the drama that I completely forgot to call you.

Grandma and Second Aunt asked me to remind River to find someone and settle down, so I paid extra attention. River and his so-called enemy are hilarious—like characters from a romantic comedy. I wish I’d recorded it.

Then we went back to River’s place. I said we could stay at a hotel, but he wouldn’t let us. He said if he didn’t take care of us, you’d skin him alive, and my family would give him hell when we got back. So, to save him from that, I brought the kids and stayed at his house. Afterward, I talked to Grandma on the phone for a while and figured you’d be free by now, so I called.”

Zachary was jealous of Grandma, though he couldn’t say it out loud.

Of course Serenity would call Grandma first—it was only natural. She was the matriarch. He had to respect that.

“Is the baby behaving?” Zachary asked. “River has someone he likes? Then Grandma can stop worrying. Now she’s stressing over River and Alex’s love lives. But if you ask me, there’s no need to overthink it. When fate steps in, nothing can stop it. They’ll get married and have kids when the time’s right.”

Serenity laughed. “If Grandma hadn’t pressured you, would you have married me? I’m pretty sure you’d still be single.”

Zachary chuckled. “That just means fate had already brought us together. If it hadn’t, even if Grandma had pushed me for two years, I still wouldn’t have married. But when fate’s here, just one word from Grandma, and I married you.”

“…Fair enough.”

He had a point.

It was fate.

“River’s kind of figuring things out, but I think neither of them is really clear on how they feel yet. River might come to terms with it sooner, but Romina might take a while. Oh, by the way, River’s so-called ‘enemy’ is Romina Lafond—the daughter of the Lafond family from Eaglioncile.”

Zachary replied casually, “Her last name and family don’t matter to me. Once River marries her, she’ll be family. Then I’ll keep an eye on her.”

After all, once someone was family, you had to remember who they were.

Serenity said, “You’re the eldest brother. You don’t need to worry about your younger siblings like Grandma does.”

Zachary smiled. “Wife, you know I only have eyes for you. From the moment I met you, no one else mattered. Other women don’t exist in my world. How could I possibly care about my brothers’ relationships? Honestly, I don’t even look at other girls. And speaking of others—babe, you’ve been gone all day. Did you miss me? I missed you like crazy. I was just in a meeting, completely distracted, thinking about you.”

Serenity laughed. “I only left this morning.”

Zachary said, “Still, when you’re not here, I miss you. I can’t focus. You’re my peace of mind, my anchor. Come home soon. Your husband is suffering.”

Serenity smiled. “We’ll be back in about ten days. If the kids are having too much fun and don’t want to leave yet, I might delay a bit longer. You focus on work for now. Once you’re done with everything important, we’ll go on vacation—just the two of us—and spend some time in our own little world.”

Zachary knew exactly what she meant and lit up with joy, but ten days—or half a month—felt way too long.

“Wife, don’t you miss me too? Are you really okay waiting ten days or more to come back?”

Serenity teased, “Do you want the truth or a lie?”

Zachary sighed. “…Give me the lie. If I hear the truth, I know it’ll be that you don’t miss me. A sweet lie is better.”

Serenity said playfully, “Of course I miss you. But when I’m out having fun, I get caught up in it and forget. I only think of you when I’ve got a quiet moment. And with two kids to manage, those quiet moments are rare.”

Zachary pouted, jealous. “I knew it. You love the kids more than me. But wife, you and I are together for life. The kids will grow up and move on with their own families. You’ve got to keep me first. Don’t let the kids take my place.”

Serenity said with a grin, “Are you serious? Those are your children too. Don’t you love them? Every day when you come home from work, you ask about Belle before you ask about me. I should be the jealous one here.”

“Don’t get too jealous,” Zachary laughed. “It’ll make your teeth soft and ruin your appetite. I can’t help it—I just get jealous of the kids. They’re always stealing your attention. Anytime we want a moment alone, those two little ones squeeze in between us and demand your time. Even at night, when I want to get close to you, I have to be on high alert for them barging in.”

He used to worry about just one kid. Now it was two. Even though the baby had grown up a bit, they had Belle now, and she still slept in their bed. Once she was older, they’d move her into her own room.

Zachary loved his kids, but when they interrupted his alone time with Serenity, he couldn’t help but feel a little bitter—like he’d created his own little love rivals.

Serenity chuckled. “I remember someone once said Belle was their world, their everything. And now look at you, acting like she’s in the way. If Belle finds out you’re complaining about her, she might ignore you for a whole month. You’re too greedy.”

Zachary quickly surrendered. “Wife, I’m just venting. I don’t actually dislike Belle. She’s our only daughter—of course she’s our darling. Since we had her, I’ve stopped being jealous of Ben. I mean, I, Zachary York, finally have a daughter! The York family’s no longer a boys-only club, thanks to Belle. Avah’s in elementary school now—she’s beautiful, smart, and mature.”

Serenity had given birth to Belle when Avah and Enzo were one. Belle was now six, and Avah and Enzo were seven and already in school. Both kids were doing well academically and had picked up several hobbies.

Avah was especially composed. She wasn’t the oldest, but among all the kids in the Johnson family, she had the presence of an eldest sister. Everyone spoiled her and listened to her.

Jane had privately told Serenity that Avah was the most likely heir to FC & Co. in the future.

But Jane only had one daughter, and she didn’t want her to take over the business.

Serenity could only reassure her—Avah was still young. There was still time. Boys matured later. Maybe Enzo and the others would grow into solid leaders. Besides, it was natural for the boys to take on the heavier responsibilities.

They would be expected to inherit the family legacy.

Now that Serenity had a daughter, and unless something unexpected happened, Belle would be the only girl of her generation in the York family. Among her cousins, she’d be the eighth in line.

And every single one of her brothers doted on her. Whatever she wanted, she got.

In the future, more cousins would come along, and they would probably spoil her just as much.

But Serenity had never considered grooming Belle to take over the family business.

The York family didn’t want that either—not because they believed boys were better or that Belle wouldn’t be capable—but because they loved her too much. They wanted her to live carefree, to grow up with freedom and happiness.

She could do whatever made her happy, without having to shoulder the weight of a legacy.

Maverick, as the eldest son and grandson, along with a few other cousins, would eventually step up and take responsibility for the family business.
